I'm in the market for a new shotgun and going back and forth between the Winchester SX4 and the Beretta A400 Xtreme. I have a recent injury that has caused me to start looking at gas operated guns to alleviate some of the recoil. I am also trying to carry a 12 gauge while cutting down weight. The weight of both of these is similar, with the SX4 being slightly lighter (7lbs vs 7.8lbs). Everything I read says the Beretta is one of the finer semi-autos ever made. I can believe that. My question is, anyone here own both, or have significant experience with both? I'll probably get a 26" barrel in either, and probably won't like the way the camo shines and end up painting it myself at some point (partial reason why I may go ahead and just get a black one and paint it when I get it).

Primary usage will be turkey hunting, with duck hunting and sporting clays to pass time between turkey seasons. Appreciate the insight in advance. The Beretta is 2x the price of the Winchester, but for the sake of this inquiry just assume the price is the same. Really just want opinions from folks with experiences in both.

With modern TSS a 12ga is overkill for turkeys. Many will be killed this year by grown men with single shot 410s. Point being, I wouldn’t base what nice semiauto shotgun I got on the idea of it being a turkey gun first, cause that’s a very different from a waterfowl or trap gun.

What’s the felt recoil on both?

That’s what would make my decision.

I have both, the A400 is a nicer gun IMO. The SX4 also costs considerably less which is a good selling point. I’ve owned the SX2, SX3, and the SX4. The SX2 and 3 both had the trigger group fail the same way. My use is primarily duck hunting and for that the beretta has been flawless. I’ve owned the beretta xtrema 2 and the A400 xtreme plus. If you are going to waterfowl hunt a lot I would give the nod to Beretta. Mine has never failed to cycle no matter how cold it is. I can’t say the same for the SX series guns. Felt recoil is a wash for both IMO. Shoulder both and see what fits you better. They do shoulder a bit different as I find the beretta a hair bulkier.

He said it would be used for other things too. Maybe he just wants to buy one shotgun, and is set on it being a 12?

OP, I have the SX4 and it’s a nice shotgun. I wish I had the A400, as I hear it’s unbelievable at throwing out light loads. I’ve had minimal problems with the SX4 throwing out light loads, but it does happen

I agree with the light loads on the SX series guns

Whichever one fits you best ....
I'm a beretta guy but will shoot anything that fits me.
If you are worried about recoil go w a 20 ga and use bismuth for ducks and tss for turkeys.
I also like longer barrels, I would go w a minimum 28" barrel

Nothing wrong with that but he also said his main reason for a gas gun was getting the recoil down from an injury, and 3” 12ga turkey loads are gonna be a bitch no matter what.

Can’t go wrong with either one but A400 will have less recoil.

If I was primarily turkey hunting, and I was worried about recoil due to injury, there’s no way I would choose a 12 over 20.

20 is also plenty adequate for ducks.

Unless you shoot a ton of geese, look into a 20 gauge. For 90% of duck hunters you won't see a major drop off.

Also the 400 is ridiculously soft shooting.

You'll get lots of A400 answers, and they arent wrong. But you are also comparing a $1800 shotgun to a $725 shotgun. And yes, Cabelas had the SX4 for $725 for Black Friday and I'm kicking myself for not picking one up.

I shoot the sx4 better.

You can get the 12 and 20 sx4 for the price of the a400

I’m not a fan of the safety on a beretta being in front of the trigger. This may not be a problem for you but something to look at

Others have stated it first.

Get a 20, pick the gun that fits you best.

I honestly have an SX4 and I don't shoot it as well as other guns.

I haven’t shot my Berreta Urika since I got my SX4. I love it and never had a cycling problem with any rounds either. Have a ton of friends also enjoying the SX4.

I have an A400 with KO and it's ridiculously lighter in felt recoil compared to my two other 12ga. Of course the other two are an 18" barrel Mossberg pump and a 26" Ruger O/U...

My A400 is at the gunsmith right now due to something going on in the trigger. The same thing happened to a buddy and his a400 one week prior to my troubles.

With that being said, I have shot over 20 cases of shells through my a400 and this is the first issue I have had with it.

ETA: I shot an SX4 a hunting partner had in the blind my a400 broke and was not a fan.
