Can this team realistically even be a play-in with Murray's salary now deadweight?

Murray as a border All Star is done forever. He's now a huge negative contract. $30 million for a guy who at best will be a very average player kind of kills the next three years doesn't it?
You're either going to have to pay to unload him or just embrace the suck, which I think is the way to go.
I hate it, but maybe now is the time to trade Herb along with CJ and BI and totally build around Zion, Trey, Missi and whoever we get this year.
Either Zion gets it or he doesn't but his salary can be cut and we should still suck enough to get another high pick next year.
Then in a few years when Murray is expiring, maybe we can try to add some more pieces.

Absolutely we can, but a good draft pick might be pretty critical in filling the gaps. The contracts of Herb, Trey, Missi and even Zion if healthy (I know) give us a good head start in making the talent vs contracts make sense.
And Murray will play, very likely next year. Not a total loss, though very painful one.
Zion missing 90% of the games is a complete non starter as far as being competitive though, that’s for sure. No BI to keep us afloat anymore.

I meant next year.
IMO, Murray will miss at least half the year and be on a serious restriction when he des play. And when he does, I expect he'll be a shell of himself.

DIdn't KD rupture his achilles a few years back? Kobe too yeah?
I realize Murray isn't them, but it isn't as impossible to come back as it was for someone as large as boogie

It all depends on the lottery. Trey + Herb + Top 5 Pick on rookie deal is a lot of talent at a discount that can make the Murray contract manageable.
Also, while we do need Murray to still be able to beat people off the dribble, which hopefully he'll be able to do, the team didn't need a quasi All Star PG, it just needed a true PG good enough to be in the starting 5. Can Murray be good enough when he returns is the question.

I know Durant's injury occurred in the playoffs, but remember he missed the entire season the following year. Generally, I think you are looking at a year-long recovery for a torn Achilles.

Take 2026 as a year for zion to either put up or shut up. Unless some team comes after him hard.
Murray at his best should be 3rd fiddle (pay and play dictates that). If Murphy grows he's easily a #2. Now who's #1? Zion? Can someone like Flagg if we're so lucky?

Oh he’s for sure going to be out a while. I’m just saying there’s a chance it isn’t a death sentence for his career. However slim that chance may be

No. We’re like 12th in the west at best next year. You have 34 year old CJ and an injured Dejounte taking up +60 million in cap. Even if we land Flagg, rookies rarely contribute to winning immediately. Dejounte is out most of next year and it would be stupid to even bring him back for 2 months next year to fight for the 10th seed.

Especially considering Flagg will be a 18-year-old rookie.

We couldn’t avoid the play in last year when fully healthy and Trey on a rookie deal. Next year we’ll have no BI, no Dejounte, older CJ and less depth. Zion could play all 82 games next year, and we still ain’t winning shite.
Dejounte’s injury was the final nail in the coffin for this era of the Pelicans. Accept it, trade everyone except Herb, Trey, and Missi and embrace the rebuild.

Lets say he takes 3 years to be the future 1st team all NBA level player offensively and we keep these other potential core members:
Age:
Missi - 23-24
Williamson 27-28
Murphy 27-28
Jones 29-30
Murray 31-32
Not the exact timeline, but the majority are still in their prime age.

I envision a BI trade that brings back a Capella type player that we can resign (hopefully with some future draft capital). Maybe we get super lucky but not totally hit the jackpot by getting Harper. I think a roster around
PG- Harper/ Jose/ Murray
SG- Herb/ CJ
SF- Trey/
PF- Zion/
C- Capella/ Missi
Maybe CJ starts season at PG. Murray comes off bench later in year. But with great health that team could compete. Gets major dicey with injury IMO. Little room for error let’s say.

Compete for what? The 10th seed? You cannot look around the league and tell me that team is competing with OKC, Boston, Knicks, Denver, etc.

How about give the guy time to get the surgery and rehab back before you just call his contract a complete negative and that his career is all but over. Players come back from Achilles injuries all the time now and comparing Murray with Cousins isn’t really fair considering one guy was 6 inches taller and 100 lbs heavier. If Murray is a 17/6/6 player with good but not great defense at PG then his contract is not bad.

Dude, I mean come on. Another year? I mean how many chances does he get?

Last year was an outlier. We ended the season as the 8th seed with a .598 winning percentage, this season that looks like it will land you in the 4th-5th seed.

Even before his achilles went boom, this team did not have a realistic shot at the play-in.
