Edited to add: I don't see a story, but according to WAFB's facebook page, "Grand Jury also charges mother who ordered abortion pill for daughter."
La. Grand Jury Indicts N.Y. Doctor Who Prescribed Abortion Pill Local Teen Took
quote:
PORT ALLEN, La. (WAFB) - In one of the country’s first-of-its-kind criminal indictments, a New York doctor is facing criminal charges in Louisiana after prosecutors say she prescribed an abortion pill that a minor took.
quote:
Prosecutors said a minor was pregnant and her mother went online and ordered a pill from Dr. Carpenter. The pill was sent to Louisiana where abortion is illegal.
quote:
Prosecutors said the pill, Mifeprestone, caused her to have a medical emergency which terminated the pregnancy. They added she was taken to a hospital.

"She was a minor and ... she was excited," Prosecutor Tony Clayton said outside the West Baton Rouge Parish Courthouse. "She had planned a reveal party. She had wanted to have this baby."
quote:
The grand jury alleges Dr. Margaret D. Carpenter of New Paltz, New York, and the Nightingale Medical Clinic she runs mailed an abortion-inducing drug to a Port Allen woman, who then made her daughter take it.
quote:
"It is illegal to send abortion pills into this state and it's illegal to coerce another into having an abortion," Attorney General Liz Murrill said. The grand jury and Clayton did not charge the mother with coercion.

Its going to be wild to see the political schism play out through legal means at the state level across the country.
I'm not sure where this ends.

I’m not understanding why the mom isn’t in any trouble

The mother should be the one facing charges.
The doctor probably prescribed it to the mother, not the daughter.

Me neither. I'm so conflicted on this.

Seems like the mother got a prescription for her but then made her daughter take it?
Not sure why they aren't after the mother instead?

It’s hypocrisy not to charge the mom if youre going to charge the doctor.

Which would still be illegal in LA, no?

I don’t live or practice in LA.

That’s irrelevant. The drug is illegal to prescribe in Louisiana. That’s a crime. The pill caused the death of an unborn child and seriously injured the mother.

Wtf was he thinking?
Some lib will come to his rescue.
Just can’t kill/abort enough babies, right?

A good reason why these “abortion by mail” schemes that blue states are running to red states should be illegal. Its none of New Yorkers business what other states are doing. Doctors are licensed by their respective states, and shouldn’t be running their practice outside them anyway.

I’m not licensed to practice in any other states besides the one in which I reside.

I’m glad to see it’s being taken seriously.

Pro "choice" types being forced to side with a doctor who facilitated a coerced, illegal abortion across state lines is going to be quite the look.

This is going to be interesting. Where the doctor presides and from where she prescribed it, it's legal. Where the person getting the prescription resides and where she received it, it's illegal.
The drugs then are sent across state lines using the mail, so I have to think this ends up being a federal matter.
