Planning college trips this summer..

Only looking to hit a handful, and only those he has a decent shot of getting into.
My son really wants to go to LSU like his big brother. We have NOT been impressed by the availability or quality of housing and counseling. Also VERY put off by the crime. (its not a normal college experience to have two close friends die violent deaths or witness shootings outside of a bar)
I'd like to show my middle son some alternatives.
He's a B student, private catholic school in Houston. Athlete and has a job. Terrible ACT scores, but we are in tutoring for that now to bring them up (think low 20's).
I've got Ole Miss, Miss State, OU, Texas Tech.. What options am I missing?
His ability to get in are absolutely pertinent to the question, but disregard financial considerations.

I had a few close friends go to Miss State, it was always fun when I'd visit them. Loved it there.

Do you want him to be a douchebag?

B student but “terrible” test scores? That looks bad for either his HS or him or both. Your question “what are his options” can’t be answered but the question of “what are not his options” certainly can

I’d rather go to Texas tech than U of H. At least Texas Tech would have a college feel and not a commuter feel.

UH is a good school and can set you up in the 4th largest city in the nation but commuter aspect and location really drag it down.

B student and bad test scores?
Sounds like a Red Raider to me

OU
OK State if you’re going to visit OU. He will end up going there.
Maybe do a full Ozark Belt swing and check out U Of Tulsa and Arkansas.

If you don’t want to send your kid to LSU that’s fine, but thinking that having a close friend die a violent death and witness a shooting are normal events at LSU is silly.

You can not possibly be trying to convince me that crime around campus is of an acceptable level.
There was a shooting in front of him at the parking lot of Spruce while his was packing his car to evacuate a hurricane. He saw a 15 year old kid get gunned down outside of Freds. He had a close friend gang-raped and left for dead on the road. Had another acquaintance through a professional club get shot up near Red Stick Social (which is where his fraternity hosts many events) ...
I went to a large university (also 40k students) in the midwest. Craziest thing to happen is if someone passed out in a cornfield and might have to walk home the next day missing a shoe.
LSU campus is surrounded by scary-as-frick areas. I love Louisiana. I really do. But it is totally sketch and gives parents pause when sending their kids there.

Damn. Your boy was into some heavy drug related stuff or hung out with those types if he saw and knew people involved with all of that.

If this is true it’s an extraordinary anomaly. The worst thing that happened to anyone I knew at LSU was getting robbed on alvin dark because he was wandering around hammered

App State. If I had really been unbiased about my college options, I definitely would've given App State a look.

Does U of H really have just a commuter vibe? It has just under 40,000 undergrads. That’s on par with LSU. I assume it’s big enough to give you the big college vibe.

I did a couple years @ Spring Hill College in Mobile, Al. Needed to grow up, those Jesuit's did all that they could...

Yeah, I don’t wanna accuse the guy’s kid of running with a bad crowd, but I went to LSU about 15 years ago (that long already? shite). The Edward Gay apartment murders were at the time, and a terrible incident. THAT was random and can happen to anybody unfortunately. The other incidents are probably the result of hanging out with the wrong people, drugs, etc.
