Tom Goldstein, a publisher of SCOTUSblog and one of the most experienced U.S. Supreme Court lawyers in the country, was indicted Thursday in Maryland federal court on charges he schemed to evade taxes for years and used funds from his boutique law firm to cover gambling debts.
The indictment — which describes Goldstein as an "ultrahigh-stakes poker player" whose games involved "stakes totaling millions, and even ten of millions of dollars" — alleges that between 2016 and 2022 he carried out a scheme to "evade the assessment of taxes, file false tax returns and fail to pay his tax obligations when they were due."
Goldstein allegedly used millions of dollars in funds from Goldstein & Russell PC — a boutique law firm in Bethesda, Maryland, that he solely owned — to cover gambling debts and other personal debts and falsely understated his gambling winnings by millions of dollars in tax filings, according to the indictment.
He also is accused of entering into sham employment arrangements with at least a dozen women whom he was in "intimate personal relationships with" or was pursuing. Goldstein allegedly listed the women as "employees" of his law firm, paid them hundreds of thousands of dollars and set them up with health insurance policies through the firm, while they "performed little or no work for the firm."
At the same time, Goldstein allegedly "owed substantial amounts of money to the IRS," according to the indictment.
This dude is a pretty big player in scotus world. By far the leading reporter/blogger on it.

Can you have winnings when you have debts???
ETA: meaning, wouldn't they cancel each other out?

I bet he's not to happy about Biden's new 87,000 IRS tax auditors.

He's screwed. He probably has a net positive in winnings and evaded taxes. Let along paying personal bills with company money.

How can you have millions in gambling debts, but also understate your gambling winnings?
And how is having an employee on the books that you are paying a crime because they do no work? Why is it the government's business how much work your employees do? There's a fine line between federal employee and sham employee.

Im guessing this could possibly be insurance fraud? He was providing insurance to the women too.

Legal requirements:
Check your local laws and regulations regarding who can be covered under a group health insurance plan.
Disclosure to insurer:
It's crucial to inform the insurance company about any non-employee individuals covered under your plan to avoid potential issues with policy terms and premium calculations.

Misrepresenting employee status: Intentionally claiming someone as an employee when they are not to get them eligible for coverage could be considered fraud.

"Premium manipulation": If you are providing coverage to non-employees at a significantly lower cost than what the insurance company would normally charge for individual coverage, it could raise concerns about potential fraud.

If you're paying for personal female company by writing it off as a business expense (by making them a fake employee), then you're gonna have a bad time.

Did it say they were from his Trust account or IOLTA? If he is sole owner of a pass through entity and the funds weren’t from those accounts, I don’t see why it would matter to a prosecutor. If it was from those accounts, isn’t the disciplinary committee the appropriate body to sanction?

What about gambling debts from an operating account classified as legitimate business expenses? That’s probably more likely

I can go read the indictment for clarify, but I assumed that either it was not pass through and he was using "company" funds on them OR, more likely, he was paying off the debts in a way to make it a business expense (and the form of the company wouldn't matter at that point)

Is he the SCOTUS leaker (Roe vs Wade)

In a formal, licensed poker room it's easy to document your losses. I'm taking this as an indication that he was playing, at least partly, in . . . other venues.

Yeah, I don't get this either. Overpaying someone for work they do is in the eye of the beholder. Look at the USPS. With the possible exception of their IT types they are obscenely overpaid for their meager skillset.
