Freeman "vs." BK Isn't the Correct Conversation

Some of you have tried to diminish what Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame have done this year (and I realize I will make no friends here):

"It was largely BK's recruits." - In looking at the two-deep, 16 of the 44 players (and that's being generous since MF was the coach three years ago) were players BK had a hand in recruiting.

"Georgia had a down year/Georgia played their backup QB." - Georgia, the SEC champs? Who beat Texas twice? And I was at the Sugar Bowl. Stockton played well, 20/32 for 232 and 1 TD. No, the ND defense was just that good, as was Mississippi's and Kentucky's vs. Georgia.

"ND could never beat 2012 Alabama or 2019 LSU" - And you know what? You're 100% right. But they're not playing against history; they're playing against now. That's like diminishing Bryson DeChambeau's US Open victory because he wouldn't have beaten Tiger Woods in his prime.

"Freeman sucks because he lost to Northern Illinios" - and look who ND lost to under BK when they had far superior talent: UConn, Duke, Syracuse, Northwestern, South Florida, Navy, Tulsa. Also squeaked out a bunch of wins against bad teams with inferior talent that should have been blowouts.

"Freeman hasn't accomplished anything BK didn't at ND" - by my favorite poster here, Bearded. All BK did the three times ND played in a playoff was get destroyed worse than the talent disparity on both teams, and was non-competitive in NY6 bowls and huge regular season games (@Miami and @Michigan).

Here's what I will say, and I've been consistent: I did like Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. I was always hoping that he'd finally find a way to reach the top. I was disappointed when he left to go to LSU. I truly think he's a good coach, and I think he can win one or more national titles at LSU and would be happy to see him do so (as long as LSU didn't beat ND to do so). So I'm leaving it as this:

Marcus Freeman is a better fit at Notre Dame than was Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly is a better fit at LSU than he was at Notre Dame. Fair?

And will be an even better fit with the Bears.

I don't really think Freeman vs Kelly is an apples to apples comparison. I'm not really a huge Kelly fan, but Kelly build ND back into a contender after a decade and a half of .500 football. He did that without NIL and with (I think) higher academic requirements than Freeman has to deal with. I think Freeman's a good coach, but he took over a well run, top ten program, then had NIL dropped in his lap and the admin lowered academic requirements, so things lined up for him really nicely. He's taken advantage of that and deserves credit for that as a lot of coaches would have probably fricked that up. I have no idea if Kelly is going to win a championship at LSU. If he doesn't make a serious run next year, he probably won't, but there's no denying he is a program builder.

What is it with you fricking ND fans? We get it you hate BK and Freeman is the truth and will shite all over everything BK ever did for ND, which your side thinks was absolutely nothing.

Good luck against Ohio State jackass

Freeman couldn’t have took Notre Dame from when Brian Kelly inherited that program and brought it to what it is today like Kelly did. Freeman is a solid coach but he isn’t working miracles. He needs to beat Ohio State to prove anything. We have all seen this out of Notre Dame before. Make the big dance but never win. I like Freeman but Notre Dame is relevant today because of Brian Kelly, that’s just reality.

Georgia without their starting QB

Congrats on your NC appearance. As of today, you're on the same level as you were with BK.

Beat Ohio St, then we'll see if you can earn that respect your fanbase so desperately craves.

Brian Kelly singlehandedly pulled your program out of golden painted dog shite.

This is a really down year in college football, and everyone should be able to see that pretty clearly. And in a year like this, all it takes is a pretty good team and a few breaks to come out on top, because there surely isn't a dominant team.

We saw Kelly take Notre Dame to a national championship game, and get destroyed by a team that was way better than any team that existed this year in college football. Those were the days when the portal and NIL wasn't watering down the entire product.

So, in short, Marcus Freeman could be totally legitimate, if he proves to be consistent (as much as one can be in this era), or he could just be a flash in the pan. It's way too early to compare and make a final judgment between Freeman and Kelly.

Great. Another delusional ND fan. Join a fricking conference then come tell me what you think. And NO Freeman hasn't done what BK did because BK went to playoffs when only 4 teams and had to play teams like Clemson and Bama who pretty much destroyed everyone they played. And he went to the NC game. Indiana? LOL. A watered down GA without their starting QB? .An inconsistent Penn St? Look I like Freeman as a coach and if they beat OSU then the will have earned it. But Freeman hasn't done squat that Kelly didn't do. Just a fact. And if LSU had ND schedule and ND had LSU schedule................................

My word - UGA didn’t miss a 2 year starter with 23-2 record, over 7,000 passing yards, 57 TD’s and 69% completion rate vs a guy starting his 1st game in a playoff game? Give me a team who is better in that scenario? LOL

I'm sick of this crap and didn't read the OP but saw this quote in the first response. ND fans are rejected or ungrateful. Brian Kelly is the winningest coach at "the great Notre Dame" of all time. He took over a trash LSU team when he left Freeman with a top 5 team. Go away.

Valiant effort, Mark.

Some people's identity and self-esteem depends on them, or someone they identify with, being better than another person or group. You can see the propping up of BK vs MF and LSU vs ND. It's a loser mentality and mindset of a mental midget. However, it's as American as apple pie. It's probably worse in the south than anywhere in the country. So save your facts and first hand accounts. Most of what you're speaking to is the insecurity and buyer's remorse of a once proud and football savvy fanbase. They'll sober up in a few years.

Freeman inherited a team that Kelly built up already. Kelly inherited a team Orgeron tore down. Notre Dame would not be in the Championship game without NIL.
