My oldest made a 4.0 on her first high school semester report card. My youngest is in 3rd grade and just got her first B. She had a full on boo-hoo fit. I wish someone had rode my arse about grades. I was more than happy to "pass" and just play sports. I have a B.A. and a Master's, but not learning more (languages, focusing on math and science, reading more, etc.) is always a regret.

It is report card time, so it was on the brain.

Grades are overrated. The ability to relate to people, problem solve and being a go getter is a lot more important than getting a C vs an A.

Unless you are trying to go Ivy league it's a total waste of time. Also, not to take away from your daughter but grade inflation is a real thing and any effort whatsoever will result in a 4.0 if combined with a decent amount of brains.

Tldr, no ragerts bro

the way the grades are weighted these days GPAs don’t have the significance they used to, my daughter has never made less than an A in her life, the GPAs in her hs class were off the charts for a 4.0 scale

Everybody is different. Some people are late bloomers.

Kicking butt is not as inspirational towards studying harder or more efficiently as you might think.

I did poorly in school. Hated learning stuff I knew I would never need to know later in life. I figured I could always learn things I need to know when it became valuable to do so.

I still Forrest Gumped my way through college and settled for a shitty gpa. The wake up call happened later when I was making welfare wages and suddenly had kids.

That was enough to motivate me to go back to college for grad school, get accepted on probation, knock out a 4.0, use it to get a better job, and then worked my way to the top of my profession with a 6 digit salary and retire comfortably at age 55.

Don’t worry about it. It’s not rocket science. They’ll figure it out.

Why not learn a language now?

If it’s something you really want to do. Go for it.

I’m smarter than you and I say you can’t learn anything in school that actually makes you smarter

Nowadays if they told the teacher to cut every kids ear off they’d do it

Definitely true in HS I think. For my kids, I just want them to perform well enough to get into large state schools, which are fine as a jumping off point for everything else.

At that point you can either excel and keep most grad school doors open (UGA to UVA law is possible, KSU to UVA law is not, for example) or do reasonably well enough to go directly into a good field.

Admittedly, the path to get into those big state schools gets narrower every year, and by the time my kids are going to college those commuter/second tier state schools may be opening more doors.

Some districts have changed the grading system. My generation's system was

A= 94-100
B= 88-93
C = 76-78
D = 67-75
F = 66 and below

Today it may be (depending on where you live):

A = 100-90
B = 89-80
C = 79-70
D = 69-60
F = 59-0

So your Bs may have been today's As. So dont beat yourself up too much

Back in the 80s/ early 90s getting a 4.0 was pretty darn tough. Only a about a dozen out of 300 had 4.0 or higher when I graduated HS. Now these days it's approx 20-25%.
