I would rather deal with a hurricane than wild fires

At least with a hurricane, there's still a chance you won't lose everything, and the damage might not be as bad. But looking at photos of entire neighborhoods wiped out by fire, where only the foundations are left, it’s obvious that recovery is going to be a much longer process.

I get that some people in a hurricane's path do lose everything, but it’s not on the scale of entire towns or neighborhoods. Unless you’re living on the coast, but that’s the risk you take when you're in a hurricane-prone area and live on the coast.

Also, you usually have a lot more time to evac with a hurricane. People had to just leave their cars on the freeway in Cali due to the short notice and everyone trying to get out at once. The people in Hawaii having to run into the ocean to escape the fires only to turn around and watch their homes burn down was crazy.

You can hurricane-proof a house to a degree and the techniques and materials to do so are getting better yearly. You can't wildfire proof a house.

Sounds like western La and Biloxi and parts of the Florida panhandle.

You ain't kidding.

At least with hurricanes you have a decent idea of where it's going beforehand and after landfall. Fires can go anywhere on a moment's notice.

Scary shite.

Agree. My heart is aching for the wildlife, horses and other animals. Obviously the people too, but I’m in animal welfare and so it is devastating in that regard.

You forgot the rest of the land mass? Biloxi to the La state line was flat within 1/4 mile of the beach.

I’d definitely rather drown, be electrocuted, or brutally struck by a tree or Volvo than die in a fire. Those three don’t seem like that bad of deaths, but fire, frick that.

If you want to spend the cash, you can build an ICF home that will survive not only a hurricane but maybe even an F5 tornado.

Like I’ve said in previous threads, wildfires are the scariest weather events there is imo.

I was scared of tornados. Fire is even scarier.

If I die by fire, it better be a nuke.

Well with a hurricane it can be destructive but moves away rather quickly. These fires are hanging around and causing massive damage until the firefighters can try to get ahold of them. Right now they can’t even use aircraft to dump water because of the high winds.

I addressed this in my OP, Jake.

We are all aware some areas get wiped out by storm surges.

Cameron, LA was a nice little town for a long time and now it basically no longer exists

But at the very least, people in those areas had more time to prepare and evac.

Imagine having to leave everything behind at a moment's notice or run into the ocean like the people of Hawaii.

Both are devastating, no doubt, but it seems like you have better odds with a hurricane than with a wildfire

Agree except on the damage issue with storm surge, like the MS Gulf Coast in Katrina where entire areas were just leveled to the ground. Yeah the time/warning issue is a huge difference.

On contrasting factor is the degree to which wildfires can be mitigated or stopped, more or less.

You don't even need to have direct fire exposure, once that smoke permeates your home, belongings, HVAC, clothes, etc. you can still sustain significant damages.

The wildfires are much more avoidable IMO

Lots of issues are complicating this disaster. But hey that's my opinion.
