Some claim the bowl games are "meaningless". Maybe so, but several of th bowl games have been damn entertaining football to watch.
Hopefully the Texas Bowl will be a great watch and the Tiger Win! Tigers Win!

Toledo v Pitt was an instant classic today. Great game that didn’t “mean”anything.

I hate to finally admit it. But I’m most excited about the twelve or so practices we get to eval future talent.
I believe I came to this after the KSU Texas bowl game
This comes after times that I was really pissed after bowl games. The Penn State mud bowl had me pissed.

The bowl games were always meaningless since they started.
LSU losing the Capital One Bowl in 2010 didn't mean shite.
LSU winning the Peach Bowl in 1996 didn't mean shite.
Hell, LSU would still be natty champs in 58 even if they lost the Sugar Bowl.
It's such a tired narrative that has popped up in recent years.

Bowl games originally were for areas to create cash flow for local businesses. Maybe players had fun, maybe fans made trips out of them. Because there weren’t many, they had some compelling matchups.
TV money changed them to “shows “,

I don’t want the Texas Bowl to be riveting for the television audience to watch. I want to see an LSU blowout.

It was insane how terrible that field was. I've watched footage of the game since and the camera did not do well at depicting the actual crap those boys played in. It even smelled like arse.

It was a classic? No one is gonna remember that game after tomorrow
A classic game is hardly seen anymore especially in the NFL

They all look like shite on paper so I haven't watched any. Are they actually good?
Posted on 12/26/24 at 10:39 pm to Broski
quote:No they weren’t. They’re closer now because the games happen after transfers leave and before the new ones arrive. And now, the guys who go pro don’t play either. Now it’s almost completely meaningless. Doesn’t mean it can’t be fun to watch. I always love more football. But it’s just not a reflection of the year we had or will have next year. “Meaningless” is a subjective term.

They mean a lot to the kids on the field playing them I can promise you that.

I reject the notion that games and seasons only have meaning if there are national title implications. The bowls historically haven’t been any less meaningful than the Vandy and Oklahoma games were this year. I fail to understand why players and fans see a distinction. Why not just opt out as soon as your team is out of the national title chase? I get that it has become self-fulfilling now that opt-outs and transfers have become commonplace, but it did not have to be that way and it hasn’t always been that way.
As to historical bowl results, people do still compare schools based upon bowl records, Top 5 finishes, Top 10 finishes, Top 25 finishes, all-time AP standings, etc. Bowl results had meaning in that context.

Nope.
Bowl games BECAME meaningless in the last 15-20 years.
When you have 6-6 teams from major conferences and 3rd place teams from the MAC playing, they’re meaningless.
And now that the NCAA has gone for a ridiculous money grab with an unnecessary 12 team playoff, ALL the non-playoff games are OFFICIALLY meaningless.

Bowl games were originally rewards for teams having successful seasons. It's all the festivities & pageantry surrounding the major bowls that fans became enamored with.

The major bowls were always a money grab. From the NCAA, to the Bowl associations, television networks & institutions themselves. Now the money grab has morphed into something else & people are mad.

BCS bowl wins had prestige even if you didn’t make the national title game. It was similar to winning your conference

Maybe because making one was a reward for winning your conference. Same as the NY6 in the original CFP format. Just a thought.

I say something similar in all of these threads. There isn’t actually anything meaningless about these games, they count just like every other one.

Well framed argument
