My father in law went out yesterday and bought all sorts of ingredients to make a jambalaya recipe he had read about. We had planned on going out to eat but we decided to cancel that idea and let him cook instead. He woke up early this morning, chopping his pork and veggies and prepping everything. Anyway after we opened gifts and did the whole family thing I fell back asleep. I woke up a few hours later and went to the kitchen to get a bowl of jambalaya but I couldn't find it anywhere. So, I asked my wife where it was.
She told me that he forgot to buy rice so he made it without rice. A jambalaya. Without rice.
It was basically a soup with all the jambalaya ingredients but no rice. No, I did not eat any.
He really belongs on Worst Chefs in America

Make a roux and you have gumbo

Pork Creole (guess we have to ask if there were tomatoes or not) served over nothing? Could have made some grits or something.

I can believe it because it sounds exactly like something my FiL would do. He never cooks.
We are here at his house for Christmas and had our big meal with my wife’s side of the family yesterday at her grandmother’s house. I got up this morning and was gonna make some turkey gravy to eat over toast after everyone was done with presents. Not a bit of flour in the entire house.

He must not be from around here if there wasn't rice in the house already

I don't even eat rice that often and I always have some on hand.

Sounds like it'd be good. I'd eat it over some white rice.

At least nobody was complaining about not enough meat in the jambalaya.

No neighbors that are friendly to borrow a couple cups of rice? Or too embarrased to ask? Lol

Couldn't you have just made some rice?
Everybody has rice in the pantry don't they?

Add a roux and extra water and you have a great pork stew. But with no rice to serve with.

I think you're a jerk.
You make the meal next time if you don't like it instead of being a bum and taking a nap.

It could be worse. A Christmas Eve ice storm in the late 90s took out our electricity. We had to eat tuna salad and crackers.

Me and my buddies will do this occasionally. Leave out the rice and put it on some poboy bread.

At least it wasn’t pastalaya.
