If you were the 49ers, would you pay Brock Purdy?

Not me, I've never thought he was great. He's a game manager, which is great when you have talent around them, but he's not a game changer.

He was solid when that roster was sick but their window seems to be closing, he’ll just continue to be further exposed

i would give my between 30-35 million per year for 5 years. maybe a signing bonus of 15-20.
he’s been making less then a million for what 4 straight years. he’s owed a nice signing bonus but i wouldn’t put him in the 40+ mill a year range.

Nope, trade him and sign Darnold. Much better version of him.

Interesting. You'd think Shanahan would have noticed this when they were both in the same locker room last year

They shouldn't break the bank for him but until he consistently looks like shite you dont really have a choice. You have to pay him Top 10-20, that's the cost of doing business. Truth is the Niners have been so mediocre on offense this year - both weapons and a dogshit OL - that he’s easily been one of the best players

Otherwise these are the Niners' options in the short term
1. Get the 4th or 5th or later QB taken in a draft (as they'll never be picking early with this roster unless they pull another Lance-esque deal)
2. Trade for a franchise QB, which no one is willing to do at fair terms
3. Sign a franchise QB through FA, which never happens (and when it does - remember everyone clamoring about Rodgers to SF being the missing piece? they dodged a massive bullet)
4. Trade/sign a journeyman QB that almost certainly won't be as good as Purdy and hope the rest of the team is championship caliber (and if so, still lose to KC in Feb)

Pretty easy choice for now tbh

QB contracts have become like max NBA contracts. There are only four quarterbacks who actually deserve $50 million AAV contracts (Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, Burrow) but if you let a good starting QB walk, you can end up being mired in mediocrity for a while. So you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place if you don’t have that top 4 QB who can carry a franchise on his back.

Paying too much almost guarantees you're stuck in mediocrity. These max QB contracts - "you just have to pay them" - might be one of the stupidest concepts in sports. In the last 15 years, how many times has a team won a SB with a QB on a maxed deal? KC once? And they've been looking pretty pedestrian on offense this year. I would submit their window is about to snap shut with Mahomes' and Jones' deals eating up the cap.

No. And I don't think they have to yet. He has one year to go on his rookie contract.

Yeah if you aren’t top 5-10, I’m letting that QB walk and spending the money elsewhere and bringing in a solid vet. The Cowboys would actually be able to contend if they hadn’t paid Dak all that money.

Shanahan is also the biggest choke artist in the history of the league and is just getting worse. Early season choke jobs fall squarely on him.

I'm convinced you could give Shanahan a roster full of all pro players with prime Montana or Brady at QB and he would still choke away many wins with his terrible game planning and play calling.

You don't win w/o a franchise QB.

So, draft one. Don't wreck your franchise by tying up an inordinate amount of your cap space in one asset.

That's easier said than done, baw

There's a reason that half or just over half of college QB's flame out. It's the hardest position to scout. So many variables come into play.

And that's also why if you have one like Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Burrow, you PAY him . They don't grow on trees.

I'm sure you're going to provide us with a long list of max contract QBs over the last 15 years who have Lombardi Trophies, right? Because if that is such a foolproof strategery, it should produce a ton of results.

How do you know any of this when you cry to the heavens about the NFL and claim you never watch it?

I’d pay him.

He’s a had a rough year but their offense has been decimated with injuries.

Brady, Manning, Brees, and Rodgers gave you a chance every year, as are Mahomes and Allen and Lamar, as did Elway, Marino, Montana, and Aikman
