i think it depends on what you want; do you want a thermostat that supports remote sensors that you can place around your house, monitors when you walk into the room, etc. or just a no-nonsense unit that you can control from your phone remotely?

i've had several; this is my current one and i like it quite a bit. solid as a rock.

but check around; i only paid like $50 for it about 6 months ago. i'm a big fan of honeywell, easy to install, no frills and will support virtually any HVAC configuration on the planet.

Smart thermostats are useless. Get a programmable t-stat that doesn't have wifi. Set the schedule and forget it.

This doesn't even get into the fact that with a properly sized system, you dont even use setbacks. You set the temperature you are comfortable at and leave it there.

I couldn’t care less about the “smart” aspect, but being able to change the set point from my phone from my couch or from across the world is a luxury I’ll never give up.

Entergy has sales on them or a $50 rebate you can look up. I got an Ecobee 3 lite a few months ago for $30 after tax and shipping.

Why is this even useful? i have a wifi t-stat for 10years and never once did that. I know what my comfort temperature is and set it there. I'm not comfortable at 66F one minute and then only comfortable at 70F the next.

are you married? my wife is constantly jacking with the thermostat and being able to adjust it via my phone is great. likewise if we've been out of the house for the day or weekend i can set it to the right temp about an hour before we get home and the house feels great when we walk in.

i don't go crazy with it, but being able to pull my phone out and change the temp..or even turn the fan on 'circulate' mode if the hvac isn't running to 'freshen up' the air is great.

Because we are human and forget things, so while I am on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, I can make sure I set my thermostat to vacation mode. Plus I like data and ecobees help you keep track of what is going on with your equipment and any potential changes to your heating/cooling.

The better question is why are you in a subforum for people that like tech?

That's a weirdly extreme strawman. For example, I generally keep my AC at 74 during the day. Sometimes, I find that a bit warm and bump it to 73 to get it to kick on. Then decide "that's enough" before it hits the hysteresis point of 72 and bump it back to 74 to turn it off. Or maybe I'm on the couch with the wife underneath a vent and she gets hot/cold/lukewarm/whothefrickknows. Or maybe on a particularly cold morning, I want to bump the heat a degree or two higher than my normal wake up temp because I want a bit of incentive to get up and get in the shower.

Or or or or or.

I manually adjust my thermostat nearly every day, frequently multiple times a day, and I can't fathom why I would ever give up the ability to do so.

I have two brand new Amazon smart thermostats that are still in the box if you want to meet.

$30 for 2, or $20 for 1.

I agree with this to an extent. I have one of these on each of my units in my house

Without internet, as long as Home Assistant is still running, I can control it from anywhere in the house. With internet, it can be controlled from anywhere

Edit: I wanted the "dumbest" smart thermostat I could find that didn't require a C wire, and this was the best choice

I like my Google Nest. I think they just announced a new model.

Do not listen to those that say stay away from the Wifi ones. Eventually you will need to break away from the schedule that you set and its easier to break it from your couch than having to go to the thermostat and mess with it.

I have this Honeywell also. The app is wonderful. The ONLY thing I would say could make it better, since it includes weather / outside temperature tracking, is if it could allow me to set "stop loss" style parameters based on the temperature outside, that would be great. The 3-degree gap between heat and AC can be tricky to navigate with our crazy temperature swings down here.

Candle Smart Home

Candle protects you from corporate surveillance by keeping your data in your home. It's the only way to guarantee privacy.
