All Dogs Go To Heaven: RIP Layla. 2008-2024

Layla showed up in 2008/2009 following Mrs. M home from one of her long walks. Mrs. M greeted me that day as I entered our home from the carport.
Mrs. M-“Sweetie, if you go into the backyard be sure to close the gate.”
Me-???-Sweetie? Looks at wife. Says nothing. Walks back out the carport door I just came in after a 14 hour day to see why keeping our backyard gate properly closed had suddenly become paramount.
Upon returning from backyard…
Me-“Why is there a hyperactive psychotic black dog in the backyard?
No!
No dogs!
And especially not that lunatic thing.
All it did the whole time I was out there was jump, jump, jump around me in circles and wag its whole behind.
Its tongue is about six feet long, its mouth is frozen in a crazy grin like it’s laughing and its eyes are crazy.
It’s a Frankenstein dog made out of parts of other dogs none of which fit with the other parts!
Why is it in our backyard?”
Mrs. M.-I was walking and she…”
Me-“SHE!
Mrs. M.-“…Yes-she was nearly hit several times on the highway, she made it across and ran to me breathing very hard and frightened and sat next to me. I walked home and said to her, ‘If you’re coming, come on’. She followed me-actually walked right next to me.
I put her in the backyard.”
Me-“CRAP!”
Thus began nearly sixteen years of unrelenting hilarity, relentless shenanigans, and boundless unconditional love and loyalty.
How can you ever thank a dog for all that?
She began having intermittent coughing early November that worsened warranting seeing her vet and was given antibiotics to clear up a possible respiratory infection.
She went off her food soon after and couldn’t walk too far before becoming unusually fatigued.
A follow up X-ray showed her lungs riddled with tumors, probably malignant. The vet believed continuing the antibiotics and starting prednisone would help her short term with some relief and give us a couple of weeks of quality time. That was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving week. By Friday she had worsened noticeably but I had an upper respiratory infection and was too sick to take her to the vet to do the inevitable. I was up with her all night that Sunday into Monday when she was finally taken to her vet, put to sleep and given peace.

RIP pretty girl. Sorry for your loss but glad she ran across Mrs M. And came into y'alls lives. We've got three fur kids and I dread the day I have to say goodbye to them for the last time.

I move to propose that we've had enough doggy dying threads for the day, any seconds?

I know a good girl when I see one. She was a good girl.
RIP

Rest in Peace, sweet Layla. You were such a good girl.

I’ve got to stop cutting onions while reading these dog threads.

They say when dogs pass, they go to the land where there is peanut butter on every blade of grass.
RIP Layla and sorry for your loss Mr. Misanthrope.

When my dog died, this poem brought me a lot of comfort. I hope it brings you comfort too.
"“There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.” - Suzanne Clothier

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve had to say goodbye to two very good boys over the last couple years, so reading everything you wrote and seeing your photos hits home.
It gets easier. But it always sucks. I know it’s cliche, but it’s true - they were part of your world, you were their whole world.

When someone asked Hellen Keller what would be the first thing she would do if she regained her sight.
She answered look my loving loyal dog in the eyes.

We’re gonna need someone on the OT to post new puppy pics or something here soon.

I am so very sorry for your loss, but it sounds like you had 16 years of wonderful love in your life. She clearly did too. She is now your guardian angel who is always by your side. Sending you and your family lots of love and condolences!

Been there multiple times and agree it is just awful, hurts all the way down to your stomach.
In our society, as men we have to push our emotions down and be strong for everyone else (just the way things work, right), but that doesn't mean we don't feel it, and the loss of a dog is as bad a day as they come.
Very sorry for your loss and RIP Layla.
