For friends from out of state… what’s your favorite

Just get them a jar of roux if they don’t want to learn to do their own roux and get a recipe off here. Don’t need a mix for gumbo.

Bailey’s Roux Mix makes a delicious gumbo for something so simple

If you just follow the directions on the back of a savoies jar of roux for gumbo it’s pretty good .

Rarely see it anymore, but I remember Mam Papaul's as being a very good mix that I would take over Zatarain's, Tony's, Oak Grove, etc.

I used slap ya mama mix a few times years ago. It was fine.

Oak Grove has a great base as well as Blue Runner out of the can for super easy. Plus Blue Runner has a seafood option and a chicken & sausage option.

I like the Jambalaya Girl mix if I want quick and easy. Make sure they get a good andouille. If they're doing it with andouille and shrimp, don't add the shrimp too soon. I also like to season chicken or shrimp before adding.
For best results, walk them through making a roux themselves in lieu of a box mix, though. It's really not that hard, it just takes some time. Seasoning it to taste can take some trial and error.

Cajun Power for the win.
Instead of adding water, use low/reduced sodium chicken stock or your own homemade stock.

Do them a bigger favor and teach them how to cook real gumbo.
