Mr. Newsom called Thursday for a legislative special session to begin in Sacramento on Dec. 2, several weeks before Mr. Trump takes office, “to safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration,” according to the governor’s office. It will initially focus on funding state litigation around Trump administration actions that might impact civil liberties, reproductive rights, immigrant protections and climate action in the state.
“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” Mr. Newsom said in a statement. “California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond.”

Throughout the four years that Mr. Trump was previously in office, California sued his administration more than 120 times.

The session would be an initial salvo in a contingency plan that has been underway for more than a year in Sacramento, involving not only the governor’s office but also legislators and state regulatory bodies. California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, said in May that he and his staff had used Mr. Trump’s campaign platform to prepare legal challenges should the former president win another term.
California has partnered with West Coast states in recent years on the environment and other issues. There were indications on Thursday that similar relationships could soon emerge to fight Mr. Trump’s new administration.

Translation: Newsom is aiming for a 2028 run for the WH.

make sure you dig that trench to the Pacific ocean deep enough in upstate CA that the water can never be redirected downstate again.

Isn't this how it's supposed to work? States decide what values and rules they want to government by, and if people don't like it they vote in new leadership or they move out the state. One of these has already happened, so just let him run the population down some more.

Keep driving California further down the crapper, Gavin! Did you not learn anything from Tuesday night?

CA needs to do the US a favor and secede along with the Northeastern states. Their values are not compatible with middle America

Am wondering what exactly are 'california values'?

Letitia James discussed rallying her office. What are these treasonous assholes planning or are they just grandstanding for their ‘28 bid?

Keep running California into the ground until it becomes irrelevant.

They’re already having a financial issues. Let’s bankrupt the whole f*cking state. That should do wonders for his 2028 campaign.

I’m pretty positive that has been Trump’s message all along.
The states can rule how they wish and not have the federal government interfere. So go ahead and protect the rights of your constituents, that way everyone knows to stay away from Cali.

I don't get the downvotes.
Cali voters put him in office twice and defeated a recall on him. They've obviously approved of leadership which has led to massive out-migration of businesses and people which has led to California's first-ever loss of a Congressional seat (and they lost TWO at once) and budget shortfalls of tens of billions of dollars annually. And now their governor is wanting to set aside some of those shrinking revenues just to wage a costly political war against Trump.
I'm all for Gavin continuing to prove his incompetence and for the voters of California to have to continue feeling impacts for continuing to place their confidence in him.
