Joe Sloan...great QB coach but not a great play caller...

I love the man as a QB coach. The work he did with JD5 is some of the best position coaching I've seen.
As a play caller..... this dude is killing drives left and right. On multiple occasions on 3rd and medium, there was no mid range option, OR it was on the complete opposite side of the field from the primary target as the 3rd or 4th read.
Seems the scripted drives produce results. Once we get to actual in game play calling, shite just falls apart.

He’ll get better. New OC you’ll have high and lows

I don't doubt that. I think he'll be great in a few years. But godamn it's frustrating right now.

Any running game at all would make Sloan look great. It’s just nonexistent.

demote sloan and promote hankton before LSU loses him

Play calling is predictable. 1st down is a 5-7 yard pass design. 2nd is always a run. 3rd is another pass. If they get a first down. it's 3 passes.

I think I agree but what's a resonable amount of time to get learn the OC "position"? He should probably get another year.
1) from an upside position (he might get better)
2) probably secures Underwood makes it to campus

Yep, to predicable.
If pass on 1st down, then 2nd is a run.
If run on 1st down, then 2nd is a pass.
also 90% of passes or outside the numbers, extremely few drag or middle of field passes. Maybe this is Nuss I not sure.

In ncaa when running up the middle and it’s not working I tend to spread the defense out with runs outside. I also don’t do pass, run, pass combos on every drive, try to not be predictable. I thought Sloan would think that also, but….

While this isn’t an excuse, the run game would be a whole lot better with a dual threat. Making the defense have to respect 3 possible options instead of just 2 (handoff or pass) would open so many more possibilities. The run game should be better regardless, but Nuss’ unwillingness to run hinders it a ton.

C- as a play caller.
Run game F.
OC is responsible.

Drags and slants are being called but Nuss takes deep shots to the outside every time.

Go back and watch the all 22. Guys were open all night and Nuss just didn't have it. It's a lazy take to just blame play calling when guys are running wide open and our QB whos been good all year can't get it to them.

Haha exactly, stop running four fricking verticals

This. The lack of a consistent run game is what’s pigeon-holing the play-calling. It makes it far more predictable and the RPO game doesn’t work if the run isn’t a real threat. Saturday night we couldn’t run inside or outside. People criticized the deep shots to Hilton, but they were clearly trying to back the defense off to have some prayer of opening space to run the ball.
The best thing BK can do to help Sloan is hire a Run Game Coordinator analyst next season. There are plenty of former HCs and OCs who know how to be more creative in the run game and could use some career rehab. Find one and pay them well to come help with tweaking the playbook and game planning.
This wouldn’t be an on-field coach, so they wouldn’t be calling plays or anything like that. This would just be an analyst who understands the run game better than a QB specialist like Sloan. Making a smart supplemental hire worked wonders for Ensminger in 2019. I don’t expect those kinds of results, but this could still be a big help in showcasing what will be a very talented backfield next year.

Why are we developing OC’s? I thought we were “competing for championships”, not developing assistants. Develop players…yes. But coaches and snalysts?

Anyone with two functioning eyeballs could see that the LSU running game last year wasn't a real running game so much as it was a man playing amongst boys when Jayden decided to run. Plus, a lot of people overlook just how good he was passing the ball while on the move, which kept defenses from completely selling out to stop his runs.
That type of success made it easy for a lot of folks to look past the shite run-blocking from last year. This year, though, we have a run-shy QB (for whatever reason) paired with an OL that's elite when pass-blocking and JV at run-blocking. The chickens come home to roost, eventually.
IMO, it's far too late in the season for Sloan to magically pull any kind of running game out of his butt. It would be better to dance with the one you brought with you and lean on the short-mid passing game, along with starting to target the middle of the field more and throwing to Green on sideline 1-on-1 jump balls.
And, maybe, force Nuss to run 3-5 times a game opposing defenses don't laugh out loud when we're pretending to run stretch-options or have him rolling out.
None of those do squat for our actual running game, but they do play to our strengths and give us the best chance to run the table for the rest of the season.

Did you ever think Sloan is hamstrung by a Qb that won't execute the Qb run option of the read option offense?

This.
I still don’t like that he’s cutting his teeth at LSU, but it is what it is. He was promoted to keep underwood and for his work with QBs, which seems to be excellent.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Is it Sloans fault Nuss doesn’t dump the ball to Williams on this 3rd & 2?
Nuss routinely does this. He will throw it downfield for an incompletion when there are players open underneath.
