I have been casually looking for a new or fairly new car as a commuter. I like the Corolla SE but the CVT transmission scares the shite out of me even though my research says Toyota has little to no problems with theirs. I know the easy answer is the Camry but I just don't care for them. Ideally I would find a fairly new Corolla with the 6 speed manual but they are rare. I really like driving a standard so I did a search for manual transmission cars and stubbled upon a KIA forte GT with a 6 speed for what appears to be a decent price. I don't know Jack about a KIA, I know it isn't a Toyota. So is KIA the trash car I suspect it to be? Will it still be functional at 150,000 and in one piece?

Give on to your inner true essence and get the Altima you crave.

Ponchy, it is your destiny.

I bought my first Kia for my wife in 2017. I doubt I ever buy another one. It is burning 2 quarts of oil between oil changes with 60k miles on it. Lots of little things are breaking. I don’t think they are the “cheap” well made car they used to be.

We've had 3 Hyundais with no issues, Hyundai and Kia have the same powertrain.

I agree that these things burn through some oil between regular changes.

They also feel flimsy and squeaky. I still tend to rent the SUV’s when I’m on the road for work since Herz has a big fleet at LAX, but I also had mechanical issues with a Sorrento with only 3,000 miles on my last trip. That may have soured me to them.

I'm not a fan of the fit and finish of Kia and Hyundai cars. They are rattleboxes. If you just want a cheap commuter manual car - get a used Civic, Corolla, but don't buy a new Kia. Hard plastics. Poorly built clutches.

At the very least, take a test drive and see what you think.

Kia is a great car without paying the Nissan, Toyota type price.

FYI: The Kia Forte, is set to be discontinued after the 2024 model year. So parts might be a problem in the coming years.
If you look at dependability, owner satisfaction, resale value, most all vehicles in the Kia fleet get low marks. As with many things, you get what you pay for. Go drive a Toyota with 150,000 miles, then drive a Kia with half the mileage, tell me the one you'd prefer to have.

I don’t know what models, but a lot of insurance companies won’t cover Kia’s because of anti-theft devices

This. There is no way in hell that I will ever purchase a Kia or Hyundai ever again.

My wife’s Hyundai Santa Fe with the 2.4L burns through a quart of oil every 10 days. That is not an exaggeration.

They’re terrible cars, and I feel sorry for anyone who owns one.

I’m not a car guy.

I bought a used Kia in 2015. Still driving.
Sometimes it is a bit sluggish getting through the gears, but it’s paid for.

It only had 3000 miles on it when I bought it.
It has about 85000 after 10 years.
I drive to work and the golf course.

I have taken it on some 300 mile trips.
It’s not terrible, but it is not some sort of dream car.

Wife has the Telluride. Bought it as soon as they came out because she totaled here last vehicle and needed something right then. 70k now and will never buy another Kia. Poorly built rattle trap. Good on gas though
