Parents, when did you first get your kid a phone/communication device?

And be honest. I’m curious as to how you guys handled it.

It’s about time my last in line gets one. He’s halfway through the 6th grade. All he has is a tablet with WiFi. Daughter got a phone around the same age and she did fine with it, but we’re not so sure with the boy. Can he be trusted with not losing/keeping track of it is the main thing.

What kind of guidelines did they have when they first got it? Were they allowed to bring it to school?

No social media is allowed. My daughter is a freshman in HS and she still doesn’t have social media and he won’t have it either.

FWIW, neighbor's kid got busted w porn in 7th grade. His dad was proud and upset at the same time. Mostly proud bc it was straight porn instead of furry or LGBT.

My daughter is also in 6th grade and we are not even considering it yet.

We have considered an Apple Watch so she can text and call, but that’s it.

My son has an iPad that he can use for texting and calls at home. It’s good for when we leave briefly and he can reach us and lets him play games with friends. No cell phone until he gets closer to driving. He’s 11.

Start of 7th grade so that we could get in touch with her. It was one of those old-school phones that would only call and send texts.....and even then you had to push 7 four times to get a S. No internet connectivity.

When she got old enough to stay home by herself for a little while. I don't recall the exact age. Probably about 12 or so.

Got my oldest son a phone this year. He just turned 10. It's a Bark phone, so he can't do anything on it without my wife and I knowing.

My oldest (daughter) got a phone at the end of her first year in middle school. She was going to a different school than her friends because of rezoning so we got her a phone so she could stay in touch with them. We did pay extra and got an old school flip phone.

My boys will likely have to wait longer.

Our oldest is 10 in 5th grade and has a watch that can communicate with me and his mom. A phone is not really on the immediate horizon for him or his younger siblings. Maybe 8th grade. We are always partially at the mercy of their peers, but he's more concerned with getting a gaming PC right now.

Nobody starts off there. You find yourself there after you take a wrong turn at 4:30 in the morning after the 8 ball runs out.

6th-7th grade is about right for us and part of it is because the schools here don’t offer aftercare past about the 6th grade level and we don’t have a landline.

That was my motivation as well. Our youngest stayed home by herself for a few hours after school in middle school.

She was also mature enough for us to leave her home and go run errands etc by that age.

I wasn't getting a landline just so I could hold off on getting her a phone for another year or two.

After 8th grade. Our last was pissed. She was indeed the last one in her grade to get a phone.

She had no need for one at the time.

My husband told her that she should feel special for the honor of being last. She wasn’tt impressed.
