Base layers - merino wool?

Looking into some merino base layers. What is your favorite brand and why?
I’m looking for tighter fitting bottoms and a top that is not under armor tight.
Not looking to pay Sitka prices but do want quality.

I'm very happy with my First Lite merino base layers. They have several different weights to choose from. Can't remember what time of year, but they usually do some sales. I thought it was around Thanksgiving or so.

I have first lite and kuiu stuff that I bought before I knew any better. It's all the same shite, and the wool moths are going to eat it eventually no matter what you do. Might as well get the cheapest you can. Their wool socks are also great.

I have First Lite, Merino 365 (Amazon) and Black Ovis. The Black Ovis were half the price and other than not fitting as well the quality is good. The Merino 365 have been solid for about 5 years. One of my buddies has FL and Mtn Ops. He prefers the Mtn Ops.
Main thing about the Black Ovis is that the top isn't long enough. If you get a boner while hunting you can't hide it from the deer by pulling your top over it. Also comes out a lot when tucked in.

Smartwool is exactly this.
I've worn the bottoms under jeans/pants and the tops either under a sweater or even with just a vest over it.

I have First Lite and love them. I will say you only need them on a cold arse morning though. They're good quality. Have the built in thumb holes so they don't ride up your arm when you're putting on outer layers.

I buy used merino base layers off ebay. Usually there are brands made for skiing that folks will get rid of for cheap. I have first lite and smartwool, and the cheap used ones off ebay are similar quality. Nearly identical shirts that's $100 from first lite will be $20-30 barely used on ebay.

I have every weight of first lite and really like them, the zip off bottoms are worth every penny extra they cost. First lite fits kind of baggy on the tops but is very soft and doesn’t itch.
I have black ovis 3/4 hoody and 3/4 pants. The hoody is very snug fit and not a long tail and the pants are very tight on my legs.
Xl for both brands
Black ovis can be found regularly on sale on camofire and for the price they are hard to beat. First lite runs sales a couple times a year.

I’ll second this. I wear midwayusa under my Nomex when it’s cold outside. I like it good enough and the price isn’t bad.
Doesn’t stop the wind though and neither does the Nomex. Shouldn’t be an issue under hunting clothes with some wind breaking material.

Check out 32 degrees. They were so cheap I bought them at Costco just to compare and for the price it’s great stuff.
It’s not something you’d use when it’s really cold and you aren’t moving but it’s perfect if you’re active.

I wear my base layer 30 to 40 days a yr so not every day. Long sleeve t is getting baggy and I should replace it but long johns are great. I really like their socks too

Honest question. Where in Louisiana do we need base layers? im in my 50's have never needed it anywhere. one extra layer until about 9:30 am on ice covered morning and that extra layer or two is coming off. Wool would be insanity. Even in Iowa twice a year do people layer up like in this thread? Whats really going on?

I wear them pretty often, especially when bowhunting. Instead of a jacket I'll wear a merino base layer with a camo button up shirt over it. Easier to move around in. If it's a 45 degree morning and 85 degree day it's a lot easier to pack out the base layer than it is a jacket.

Some people like to wear big chunky outerwear, some like to wear base layers

I wear my lightweight merino base layers if it gets below 50 and below 35 I'm wearing my heavy stuff

I’ve needed base layers in Louisiana before. Had a week and a half of sub frozen weather last year.
With that said, I am currently shopping for some because I have never worn true “base layers”, just another pair of sweatpants when it was real cold.
But I’m going to be in Montana for several weeks and have a strong feeling I will need more than sweat pants.
