Elk in Texas

On my July trip to West Texas we saw a herd of elk and until then I didn’t know Texas had them. Really didn’t realize how common they are - saw 4 bull elk on my drive from my snake spot back to the hotel late last night.
Here are some crappy pics of 3 of them.
The last one was the size of a horse - looked so awesome while running. It’s astounding to me how much wildlife West Texas has - truly a remarkable place. And the number of deer running around is mind boggling. I’m literally afraid to drive 75 on these highways at night with so many deer & elk running around.
Bonus aurora shot…

Free range Elk in West Texas (Davis Mountains) are amazing. Several outfitters working with private landowners there are killing some great bulls.

They kill some giants. Can't imagine what those prices are these days. I contacted and outfitter 3 or so years ago and it was $9500 then.....

Pricey enough I'm driving past all that and going to New Mexico instead. I'd love to kill a free range Texas bull, but not sure I ever will
I'd also like to see TPWD change elk from an exotic to a native big game animal

I agree. Can't believe they are listed exotic and can hunt anytime. Especially the West Texas herd.

Not to pry, but I thought that for a guided hunt with tags and land access and such you were looking at about $9500 just about anywhere, no?

Elk also tastes far better than whitetail.

Elk and Axis both on my list. Be fun to take em both in TX!

I'm going on a 5-day guided hunt with accommodations on private lands in NM and not paying that much.

couldn't believe how much better. I'm typically a "meat's just meat" kind of eater, but elk truly is outstanding

Pronghorn and Axis have been my favorite. Haven't had elk yet. Maybe one day. Nilgai is pretty damn good too.

I like pronghorn but could see how others may not
I've never cooked axis. I'm planning to buy my wife an axis hunt for her birthday or our anniversary.

Sheeeee-ite. $9500 would buy lots of angus to butcher

Back when Clayton Williams was around he invited my boss to elk hunt on his ranch out there. My boss got one. So I knew that there are elk some where in West Texas.

My wife doesn't hunt but that's a good idea. I might do the same.

I have never shot one but have eaten it several times. If I hunted a place with axis I would never shoot another whitetail unless I wanted the horns and the meat would just be a byproduct.

What county in West Texas are we talking about?

I was hunting central/west Texas last fall and kept hearing one bugle. I assumed it was behind a fence somewhere but I was hoping he’d walk out. Guess it’s not an exotic and not fair game there
