I hate the Bengals, but I do feel bad for Joe Burrow.

Joe Burrow has the talent to take a team to the Super Bowl, as he has proved already. Joe Burrow has maintained his talent and has actually gotten even better since making the Super Bowl 3 years ago. The problem is the GM and the franchise are responsible for keeping the TEAM great around their elite franchise QB, as time goes on. Player will always come and go after every season. Looks at the elite GM's like the Ravens, Eagles, and Chiefs have. That's why they are competing at the top of the league every year.

The Bengals as an organization have failed on every level.

1. Not retaining productive and elite players

On defense, they let an elite DT(which are hard to come by) in DJ Reader walk and go the the lions instead of paying him.

Let Joe Mixon walk, when he's healthy, he's one of the better veteran backs in the league. He will be back in the starting lineup for the Texans soon and continue to kill it like has has all season, when healthy.

2. Not moving on from players who's prime has clearly ended.

Von Bell is washed, he doesn't have the same speed he did during the Bengals playoff runs. Why did y'all bring him back? The Safety play from the Bengals might be the worst in the league.

3. Bad Drafting

Just doing some quick research on the Bengals last 3 draft classes...

Where's Daxton Hill?

Where's Myles Murphey?

Where's DJ Turner?

Where's Zachery Carter?

Where's Jordan Battle?

Where are all these defensive players the Bengals spent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks on the last 3 years outside of Cam Taylor-Britt?

4. Not keeping your star players happy outside of Burrow when it comes to the checkbook:

So the Bengals aren't going to give Tee Higgins or Ja'Marr Chase contract extensions and expect them to be happy with that? The Eagles did it with D. Smith and AJ Brown. Maybe the Bengals would have beat the Patriots week 1 if Chase was paid and not skipping practice.

I don’t know and am just asking: Does the size of Burrow’s contact effectively prevent the team from retaining their other talent?

Burrow is doing everything he possibly can but that defense and playcalling by Taylor are dog shite.

Thems the breaks of taking a gigantic contract and signing up to continue to play for a historically dog shite franchise.

Number 2 is exactly what they did with Mixon and you are criticizing them for it.

However, overall you make good points.

Yes but there’s nuance for every org, and all teams with franchise/paid QBs have to get creative managing the cap and scout/draft well to keep the rest of the roster competitive.

One of the main issues in Cincy is the owner is cheap AF. People don’t understand not all NFL owners swim in the cash required to pay signing bonuses, because it’s money that is paid now. So some franchises (ie Cincy, Tennessee, etc) don’t have Jerry Jones levels of available cash to stroke huge checks, or aren’t willing to.

Paying players signing bonus money gives you cap flexibility because it lowers the cap hit on any player you believe is a cornerstone part of your franchise. The downside is once you start kicking the can down the road (converting contract out years to bonus money to keep a stronger roster in the short term), the bill comes due and you are essentially hoping the players you gave the bonus to don’t regress at a faster rate than expected.

How is Burrow without question a top 3 QB in the entire NFL? Lamar has five fewer losses than Burrow in 25 more career starts and is 5-1 head to head against him. Allen is 51-20 over the last five seasons while Burrow is 30-26. Furthermore, Burrow has only played two full seasons as a starter. Burrow's played three more games than Tua Tagovailoa who's widely considered one of the most injury prone QBs in the league. Burrow's closer to Justin Herbert as a player than he is to either Lamar or Allen.

I was at the game yesterday. Even with the fact that the O-line sucks, the coach sucks and the Defense sucks a fatty, it's still criminal that is a 1-4 team. Burrow is unbelievable with Higgins and Chase and moves that offense down the field like George S fricking Patton. They should be 4-1 at least.

It must really be frustrating to be a Cincy fan. You can see the anguish...

I'm the opposite. I don't hate the Bengals and do not feel bad for Joe Burrow.

He knew what he was signing up for at renewal. He knew their history. He voluntarily decided to continue his career with a cheap arse franchise.that has historically committed to putting together poor performing but affordable teams.

I'd imagine it would be like marrying a multiple divorcee whore. Why expect her to change? Did Joe expect her to change?

They paid him way too much money and blew their cap space.

Those QBs play for better franchises with better players on both sides of the ball. The Bengals may have the worst owner/management in football.

You use Ravens vs Bengals as a measuring stick to say Lamar > Burrow (which is hilarious) but use a different metric for Allen vs Burrow. Tell me, how have the Bills fared vs the Bengals recently?

And this probably can be linked to poor draft performances due to not spending on scouting department like other franchises.

This. Like the Raiders, the Bengals are the family business. The owners don't have a big corporation backing them up.

They made Burrow the highest paid player in NFL history. Ja'Marr wants to be the highest paid WR in the league as well. Tee Higgins wants to get paid. You are mad that they didn't pay Reader or Mixon. If they had spent money on Mixon instead of rebuilding the offensive line, you would be complaining about that too. You can't just keep everyone that wants to get paid.

Burrow's salary cap hit over the next 3 years are the following:
2025: $46,250,000
2026: $48,250,000
2027: $52,250,000

Combine that with what Chase wants, which would be about $35,000,000 per year and you are looking at $82,000,000 of the salary cap (approximately 32%) spent on 2 players.

Burrows cap hit is like $28 million right now.

It’s gonna start taking up some of the pie soon but it is not a hinderance at all to them signing guys right now which makes it all the worse
