I was helping my niece last night with her high school Trig and she was telling me that her math teacher is so strict and mean and passionate in class and gives very little partial credit on tests.

I asked her how the grades are and she said the test averages are always high C or low B.

I told she was lucky to have a teacher like that and who didn’t care if they “liked him” or thought he was the cool teacher”

OT thoughts ?

You are 100% correct. . . It's math. It's either right or wrong. No partial credit. Period.

Ms Flack at Central High back in the 80’s.

She was tough as nails, gave a pop quiz almost every day, and pushed us to misery and despair regularly. She taught math and computer science. She was so strict and tough that we rallied as a class and formed a club called the FLO (Flack Liberation Organization).

After Friday night football games we’d roll her house and paint her mailbox crazy colors.

She would retaliate with even harder tests and homework assignments.

Almost nobody got an A in her class. But we all learned way more than most high school math students.

Best teacher I ever had.

Shut up, nerd.

It’s amazing Scruffy even remembers that.

Best teacher I ever had was the one who was the strictest disciplinarian. She demanded respect and your best effort and she got it.

All the things I heard about her scared me going into her class, but I loved that class

The two I had that were the biggest assholes are the two I have respect for now.

If any of you know Alex Laney from Ruston - He was feared from Kindergarten till the 8th grade but as I look back he was a great teacher.

That semi prepares kids for the electrical engineering curriculum in college. I remember plenty of tests where the avg was in the 30’s.

200% wrong. We have to build students esteem up. The “right” answer is is only what the student thinks it should be. Otherwise it is supply patriarchy.

Sarcasm off.

Trig is actually useful in everyday life. It isn't abstract like much of math is. Dify Qs on the other hand is basically useless for the average person... ever. I have used trig either actual formulas or concepts 1,000s of times in my life the number of times I have used differential equations since turning in my final exam exactly zero.

I had a chemistry teacher like that in highschool that everyone hated. She beat the fundamentals into us and said you’ll thank me in college.

She was right. College chemistry were some of the easiest classes I took.

Shoutout J Hop.

Lou Clouatre at Catholic high. He would walk up and down the aisles at the beginning of every class and check to make sure everyone did their homework. If you didn't you had to do a lollipop, which consisted of starting with 2100 and subtracting 7 and putting the result on a piece of paper. You kept subtracting 7 until you got to 0.

I dunno man. The two teachers who contributed the most to my education both gave partial credit. One was algebra/geometry/precal. The other was college physics. They would pack WAY more into the exam than was possible to complete. Even with the partial credit, my average grade was 30 before they applied the bell curve to 99. They pushed us very hard, but gave partial credit. I think the push is more important than demanding perfection.

PS: my english teachers demanded perfection, but didn't push us. The results speak for themselves. I can't complete a sentence without fricking up, but I can solve a math/physics problem.

In the 1980’s, Neville had Mr Rogers, Miss Whit, and Mrs Mel, who all were 10 out of 10 on the teacher scale. When I got to LSU, math and English were easier than my high school classes.

My favorite teacher from high school was a real hard arse lady, English teacher. At the time I even liked her, while everyone else hated her because she actually made you work. Need more like her, she helped me in more ways than I probably realize.
