Southside used to be a cool place to hang out.

Idk. I think all the good parts of Birmingham St George’d themselves many years ago. You cross the street and you’re technically in a different city

The news articles were amazingly devoid of details. “Someone did something and some people got shot.”

Was this a guy shooting up a church? Two gangs shooting it out at a drug deal? Two guys hitting a bunch of people while shooting at each other at a birthday party? Octogenarians with Tommy guns blasting it out over a quilting bee argument?

Mormons? Chinese? Black folk? College students? Senior citizens?

The fact that the media feels no responsibility to put any facts at all in the story amazes me and probably tells me all I need to know.

4 dead, four with life threatening injuries, and dozens others shot. Outside of a hooka bar. Sounds like a drive by with multiple shooters reported.

That’s bad. Bham city limits are a war zone. The mayor is a racist, Dem activist. Calling him worthless doesn’t begin to capture it.

There has always been an effort to make certain areas of Bham nice. Southside was the first of those. In the 80s-90s, it was the one place downtown that you could go at night and go out to eat or to a bar with a reasonable expectation of safety.

As the suburbs grew and Bham declined, other areas were tried: Lakeview, Avondale, and 1st Ave N. This detracted from Southside and it’s gone downhill recently.

We all know who was involved.

Five Points isn’t part of the War Zone though. This is a shocking incident that’s going to have a pretty big impact on the entire area.

Uh, I understand what you’re saying but when stuff like this is happening it is by definition part of the war zone. And this isn’t the first incident for this particular part of Five Points. There have been several incidents.

It has but it’s been like that for many year with mild improvements from time to time but the trend is bad.
There have been at least two other quadruple homicides in Birmingham this year.

While crime in Many other cities, including nola, are seeing big improvements from 2023, Birmingham is getting worse.

The mayor and council members are classic racists who want softer stance on crime because they see law enforcement as racist. Mayor had monuments taken down while also passing ordinance that no one can hold protests in public parks. He was supported by Bernie sanders who helped him raise money.

Bham has had a number of black, Dem mayors now, and we never saw the kind of crime and violence that exists now. I may not have agreed with them politically, but they were decent men who wanted what was best for the city. They kept this kind of shite under wraps. The bunch we have now at City Hall is a different story.

My parents grew up in Birmingham. I spent summers there with my grandparents when I was a kid. It was a safer place then. It is sad to see what it has become.

And to be clear, 5 points is a bar area with nice hotels and proximity to UAB.

Historically it’s not upscale but it certainly wasn’t a war zone like other parts of Birmingham which were lost decades ago.

Nailed it. Suburbs are good.

Bham is plagued with car gangs equipped with automatic weapons and body armor. You won't hear that in the news though.
