My first girlfriend was an absolute goddess named Rita. She wore beautiful full petticoated light blue flowered dresses with the sexiest black patent leather shoes you ever encountered, every day to school (4th grade). she had a perfect figure and a beautiful laugh that would give a young Baseball player improper thoughts as he lay in bed about a block and a half up the hill from her house. Oh, she smelled like Jergens lotion (sigh).
Enter my best friend Johny Ward, who played right field to my centerfield. For reasons I still don't understand, she loved baseball players and had a fascination for outfielders who could hit. Sadly Johnny and I were the two best hitters on the team (Barfield's Hardware) and Johnny Also had the 10 year old hots for Rita.
We fought like yard dogs over her for the entire season, making heroic shoe top catches on Defense, knocking the ball out of the park at Clinton Blvd. Elementary every time we didn't strike out, then catching hell from coach Peterson for waving at Rita, who liked to sit with her dad in the first base line bleachers as we trotted the bases, with Rita flirting shamelessly, batting her eyes as she shyly waved back.
What happened? just before fifth grade, her dad got a sales job in Gulfport and Rita moved.
Love Lost is never forgotten.
Lost my best bud Johnny when we moved to Clinton in the 6th grade. His family moved to south Mississippi (Moss Point) a year later and he fell off the face of the earth. Hope he didn't locate Rita down there. I'm not sure I could take that.
