From an American perspective, is it acceptable to have a favorite team in the Premier League and the Championship? What if both teams end up in the Premier League for the same season(s)? Is it okay if they are not rivals?

I already know people over in the UK view Americans being a fan of any team in the Premier League as arbitrary and "plastic." They likely have this view of even people that are say, Everton fans, because historically Everton are a top top team.

Frankly don't give a damn what a bunch of mouth breathers on Reddit think but am curious about this board's opinions on the matter.

For instance, I like Leeds but am having a growing affinity/fondness towards Wolves (who may just get relegated this season anyway, and conversely Leeds may come back up).

I look at it like this, we're all bandwagoners to some extent since we're Americans cheering for teams across the ocean, so I laugh anytime another American looks down on me for which Euro teams I support.

There is a person on this board that is a total blow hard about this type of stuff. Pretty sure they spent some time in England but not actually British. They spew a lot of bs about their teams rivals as if we’re sitting in a pub in northwest England. Takes it way to personal to be talking to a bunch of people in the southeast United States. It’s not that deep and definitely unhealthy to be the way they are.

They do, but the fascinating trend for me has been Americans gatekeeping from other Americans.

There's a certain smugness from the American diehard soccer fan that annoys the shite out of me as someone who would like to see the game grow.

Do you boo

But we went through a period on this board of Liverpool fans calling people bandwagon fans of other clubs because they decided to support arguably the biggest club in England because it that a span of bad seasons.

Are you referring to SCH who corrects people when they use the word flop, for example?

It’s not my fault I walked into a Liverpool bar in Ireland, unknowingly, wearing a red polo shirt. Seconds after they won the FA cup almost 20 years ago. Why did someone just hand me a baby? I like that kind of people.

I think that TV distribution in the US has handicapped even EPL for Americans until recently. What channel, what package, what year? Even worse for non EPL teams. Even today, is it on USA, peacock, or P+ (far better sitch.)

And there are EPL fans in every country in the world. I think I counted eight languages spoken in my immediate area the only time I’ve been to anfield. Just because you’re not English or from the broader UK you’re not any lesser, you’re a supporter.

And frankly, I love how much English people that live 30 miles away from each other can insult each other over football at the drop of a hat. I saw a teenager wearing a Man U jersey after the match, I threw up “3” and smiled. His shame was satisfying! lol

I usually root for particular players specifically USA players and the clubs they happened to be on at that time.

I know I have gotten heat for jumping from club to club in terms of support.

But I enjoy watching a good game over a particular team.

And I like rooting against clubs for various reasons.

This. We’re all bandwagoners. It’s still fun to talk shite to fans of other clubs whether they’re friends or just people on this board.

And just because you’re not a local doesn’t mean you don’t/cant feel a bond with the club after following and watching them nearly every weekend for years on end.

I totally understand why people that dislike the sport would find it weird that Liverpool wins and losses give me the same highs and lows emotionally as LSU sports or the Astros who I have been rooting for since I was a kid, but that’s the honest truth. It dives some of my friends insane It is what it is

The best part is the ones I know coincided with them winning the CL in 05 and playing in the final in 07. Yet somehow they weren't bandwagon and everyone else was. Liverpool is the worst in every way. Just a truly terrible set of people.

You live on an entirely different continent, regardless of which team you support you can't really be considered a true fan. So root for whoever.

These people exist in England. What’s happened is some clubs, like Brighton, were prob not seen as ever doing what they are doing 10-20 years ago.

quote:

By the late 1990s, Brighton were in the fourth tier of English football and having financial problems. After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Football League to the Conference in 1997, a boardroom takeover saved the club from liquidation. Successive promotions in 2001 and 2002 brought Brighton back to the second tier, and in 2011, the club moved into the Falmer Stadium after 14 years without a permanent home ground.

So being from there during that era, you may have been a fan but also had a preferred top team you followed.

We’d prefer allegiance to proximity like the clubs origins of the city/culture/history/ownership, but at the end of the day, it’s more a globalized market and entertainment. Just like a message board!

I don’t like that Landon Donovan’s other team is Mexico.
