Is it ok the use a window unit in your house without installing it in a window?

I was just thinking that it’s a royal pain in the arse when a hurricane knocks the power out and you have to install window units in your windows and then take them back down when the electricity comes back on.
What if you just put the unit on a small table or something and run it like that without installing it in a window? Is there any reason you can do that besides the window unit taking up more space the room it’s in?

No it isn't, for multiple reasons. The main one being that they aren't designed to function that way. It has to exhaust hot air our of the back of the unit.

There are portable a/c units that you can duct the heat outside, but the window unit is designed for a window.

That won't work, it will put out more heat than it takes in.
The whole point of AC is it's a heat pump. It pumps heat from inside to the outside. If the condenser side is inside too, you're just pumping heat from one side of the room to the other, and adding the heat from the inefficiency of the unit.

You could make a hack. Make a cutout in a piece of plywood. Fit the plywood up to the window opening. Run a flexible hose from the unit to the cut out. Just make sure that your unit is off the ground and secured to something so no one steals it. You could just get a cheap metal cart or build one from 2x4s and make it an all in one kit.
Also, make sure it is nowhere near your generator.
The better solution is to skip the window unit and get an indoor portable unit.

The gas company throttles down the cooling power on these unjts if they arent set in a window.

I got an indoor portable one. You still have to exhaust it to the outside and it's still kind of a pain in the arse.
