San Fran for 1 night?

Going to Napa next week, but flying into San Fran and staying 1 night there since we've never seen it.
Doing the Hop on Hop Off Bus Tour to quickly see the sights.
Staying in Hotel Argonaut on bay by Fishermans Wharf.
Any good restaurant recs nearby? Was looking at McCormicks?
Any other suggestions, food or otherwise?

15 or 20 years ago I considered San Francisco the most beautiful big city in the US. Now I would rather head straight for the wine country.
Or, stay in SF the last couple of days to make it easier to fly home from the airport.
I have stayed on Fisherman’s Wharf before and enjoyed it. I would rather stay on Knob Hill. I used to like the Union Square hotels but that area has deteriorated.

Your hotel is literally across the street from the greatest Irish coffee in the world at The Buena Vista. It would be a tragedy if you didn't go there for a few.

have heard that from a few people. BUT we've never seen it, so it gets 1 night.
I'll go try to Irish Coffee for sure.

if I had one meal in SF it would be the cioppino at sotto mare. Have fun SF is awesome

And like the other guy said, the Buena Vista
If you’re physically able you can bike the GG bridge to Sausalito and have lunch on the water. Sausalito is awesome. The actual bridge part is tough going up there and then dodging all the walkers but the rest is great

I would opt for the Progress next door. Food is better IMO. They are run by the same people and both are 1 Michelin Star.

Agree completely! I'd add, although places like McCormick's are good, SF has places with it's own personality that you should go to. You shouldn't go to a chain in SF.
See the bridge and the park. Ride a cable car and walk Lombard street. It's very doable to see much of SF in a day or so because it's really small. I know it's liberal AF and has lots of problems, but there are a lot of cool places to see in SF!

I'm quite physically able, but unless you are very comfortable on a bike, don't! We were planning on it and decided to just walk instead. So glad we did! It would have made us very nervous. It's almost always quite windy and there are tons of people walking. It sounds great in theory, but not so much in practice!

Luisa’s is a great restaurant close to Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s been there for over 60 years and it has the feel of a neighborhood place that more locals than tourists visit.

Thanks. Didn’t know Mccormicks was a chain. I do always prefer a local type place over a chain any trip.

I'm in the Bay Area a couple times each month for work, and one of those is usually in San Francisco. I still like the city, but helps to know where you should be these days. Tenderloin and part of SoMa (SW of 6th) was always a bit of a show, but I never felt totally unsafe. Once COVID hit, most of Market and Union Square became complete shite. Still is, but I don't mind going because some of the best cocktail bars in the city are around there. That said, San Francisco still has some fantastic neighborhoods worth checking outside of the immediate downtown area, including Bernal, Noe, Castro, Haight, Outer / Sunset, Pac Heights, Potrero / Dogpatch, etc.

One of the spots I used to like to go to when living up there was the Waterfront restaurant. It's on the bay and just down the street from Fisherman's Wharf [https://www.waterfrontsf.com/)]Waterfront[/link]

Don’t listen to anyone that tells you SF is terrible. It’s an awesome city, assuming you do a little research and stay out of the areas you have no business being.

Do not get off the bus! Try hard to get a seat on the top of the bus! Ride the entire route. Then, take a cab/ UBer to where you want to go. Getting back on the bus can be a bitch especialy if you get off across the bay bridge. It may take 1-2 hours to get back on.
There so much good food in the city.
I really like Tomoasso's for pizza.

I should have seen this before our trip.
Got off because my wife wanted to see the "Painted Ladies" houses. walked right back and waited for over an hour only to never see another bus. Took an Uber back. Luckily, we had already seen the Bridge, etc...
SF was absolutely beautiful city! We were surprised and enjoyed it very much. Had late lunch at Scoma's on the water and it was great.

A+ trip overall.
My wife and I really enjoyed the day in SF. Beautiful City.
Drive up to Napa was easy the next morning. Stayed in the City of Yountville. Known as the culinary capital of Napa. Ate great food and drank great wines. We enjoyed the smaller boutique wineries and tried to stay away from the "big brands" wineries, although we did a couple of them.For example, Frank Family is one of our favorites at home, but it was our least favorite visit. Its worth the money to hire a driver once in Napa for the wine tours. Start making your reservations now for food and wine stops because they fill up fast the closer you get to your trip.
