I’ve been buying stihl brand, but I’m starting to wonder if the stuff that’s $4 cheaper would work just as good. I’m not sure if it would really matter that much

I would say it does not as long as it has the basic characteristics of bar oil. For instance, bar oil has some anti-sling properties that normal motor oil does have. So, I would buy cheap bar oil, but not regular motor oil.

assuming you're a homeowner, you'll damage the chain in other ways wayyy before seeing the effects of a cheap chain oil.

I buy tractor supply brand for like $9/gal

I used vegetable oil once when I was in a pinch. Worked fine.

Just remember ever time you sharpen your chain or swap out a chain flip the bar 180.

Full Synthetic Stihl is $8/qt at Northern Tool. Just spend the extra buck or two on the good stuff.

I’ve seen people flip the bar. I’m assuming for even wear? How often should I do that?

I try to flip bar and sharpen the chain every time I run out of fuel. I also use stihl oil. I don’t use it enough to worry about the cost. Any oil would work and have run 10w30 in a pinch.

I just get whatever can says “bar oil” on it. I’ve had probably 10 different brands run through my chain saws, never found any to be any better. The only difference is some smell different than others. Only reason I know that is half the time I don’t screw the cap on all the way and get down the trail and say “wtf is that smell” then I see the cap dangling.

I use recycled engine oil from my truck. It's a diesel so that oil is extra nasty. Haven't had any issues.

I just put a little gear oil in both my saws. They are ready but hopefully I won’t need them.
