The SKC is about to start falling apart

Christian Clark got a recent report that was done on the Smoothie King Center and the TL;DR is a lot of the components are near their end of life, from the walk in freezers to the seats.
Basically they can't kick this can down the road much longer. Either they need to spend $250 million on renovations or I think the figure I've seen is $1 Billion on a new arena.

Smoothie King Center has undergone “minimal renovations” since opening its doors in 1999, and “most systems and equipment have reached or exceeded their usable life,” according to a copy of a report The Times-Picayune obtained.
In March, the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District approved a study of Smoothie King Center’s infrastructure.
...The report’s findings shift the spotlight onto New Orleans Pelicans owner Gayle Benson and Louisiana state officials to either fund a renovation of the nearly 25-year-old building or build a new arena that can house New Orleans’ NBA team.
...Benson, who is also the Saints owner, shared the cost of the Superdome renovation with the LSED and the state.
...Basics at Smoothie King Center such as seating need to be addressed soon, the facility needs assessment said. The fixed seating in the almost 25-year-old building is all original.
"The typical life span of a fixed seat is 20-25 years," the report said.

Maybe Gayle decides to sale instead of spending the money, I hope

Careful what you wish for. A sale and a non-viable arena could mean the team moving.

We are probably getting a new arena

Without Gayle we don’t have a team within 5-10 years.

New location or tear down rebuild

If you're a fan of the Las Vegas Pelicans, maybe you'd hope she does.

No chance they move to a new location.
And a full tear down and rebuild would take multiple years. I'd imagine it's going to be renovations in phases over the course of multiple offseasons like they did with the Superdome.

The group that owns/runs the stadium wants more money? Im shocked

More than likely two full seasons worth of time from start to finish.
There's really one main problem for this route: there's a lack of locations in New Orleans to house the Pelicans for two full seasons.
Does the state pay for bare-minimum quality-of-life renovations to Lakefront Arena and the Pelicans play there 2 seasons? Do they go to Baton Rouge and play at the PMac for 2 seasons? Ship them to Birmingham for 2 seasons? Split time at all 3 locations?
Also, just about any player worth having would avoid the Pelicans for those 2 seasons even more than they would now. They'd end up with a roster of Who?'s in a complete burn down rebuild. It may not be a totally bad consequence.

Needs to go on the riverfront with the ability to see the twin spans since LED's were installed.
You dont need to worry about upgrading some other site or moving families. Plus the area near the convention center should really REALLY be the area of focus.
If yall are that scared about proxy to Bourbon, add additional rail and SECURE IT.

quote:Sounds good in theory. However, that would be very costly and take years. The infrastructure in that area could not handle the traffic flow and a rail system (which would make sense) would be a long term project.

Lose Champions parking and Postal building. When done scrap SKC and build parking/retail/food/ + training where SKC was. Raze PlazaTower while at it

It has always seemed fine when I have gone to games.
I will never understand the desire by fans for these expensive stadiums and arenas. It is only going to price people out from attending to watch the actual game.

Don’t know if a true renivatuon is possible. New arena may be only option or team is gone

Those are the most popular. But there are a bunch of other places that would be great locations for a team. Vancouver, Mexico City, Louisville, Nashville even St. Louis. As a non-local fan, that moved away almost 10 years ago, I wouldn't mind the team finding a new home. It would be nice having stable ownership that was involved and competent..
