Horizon: An American Saga now on Max

I was disappointed to see a lot of the less than steller reviews. The 3 hour run time will be more tolerable at home for most people though.

I'll wait til part 2 or maybe part 3 to check it out and split it up into episodes of a series if it's any good.

Watched this last night. I loved it.
I really can’t fathom why the reviews were so bad except that the critics either didn’t know it was only part 1 of a continuing story or they were “offended” that the Indians killed people.
Disclaimer: I am 100% the target audience for Horizon. I think Kevin Costner is a goddamn American treasure. Westerns are my favorite movie genre. And I like a little nudity sprinkled in my movies.
Great cast. Nobody felt like they were playing pretend like in the Marvel or Star Wars crap. It had a bit of a Fargo season 2 vibe with the gangster family. Beautiful scenery. No CGI.
I have no idea if it’ll stick the landing. But it was an awesome setup for an interesting story.

Watch 2 hours last night and the rest this AM. I liked it but I left it feeling completely unfulfilled for my 3 hours. My biggest problem was the slow character development. Even after 3 hours (though there are multiple sets of characters) I was just beginning to have an investment in anyone. So much of the drama and death felt like it was happening to NPCs. One example was who the hell is Hayes Ellington (Costner) and why did he turn Captain Save-a-ho within minutes of meeting him. It is fine to drag that out a bit but if I have to watch 12 hours over multiple years to unlock him I am not amused.
There is a lot right but my lack of emotional attachment to anyone leaves me cold. I am not saying there was no sparks of attachment by the end but it was minimal, especially for 3 hours of movie. I hope he is able to finish the saga because not getting the full story will irk me even more.

I honestly think it's due to most people's need for immediate gratification now-a-days. I am like you, 100% the target audience for this type of movie.
I loved the "realism" of it all. No CGI, no "plot armor" wtf moments just a 100% believable, real saga being told. Seeing it in theatres was even better IMO. The sound of the gun fights were the most bad arse part of the movie. I really hope they show the rest in theatres but I'm afraid due to the bad release it's going to move to streaming only. We'll see.

I think they were bad b/c it's clear as fricking day this should have been a TV series.
You can't expect people to want to sit through a 4 part 12 hour+ epic western in theaters and you sure as shite can't start everything off w/a 3 hour movie that can't stand on it's own when it's not based on any existing IP w/zero built in fanbase to support it.

Agree. That’s asking waaayy too much of an audience.
Expecting an audience to sit through 3 hours of a slow build at the beginning of summer, then wait until the end of summer for Part 2 is unrealistic, but that’s only half of the problem.
There’s still another two parts and six hours before the story is concluded, and there’s no guarantee if or when it will be completed.
Ideally, it’s a hit on Max, and rest of the saga is moved from theatrical releases onto MAX. It could be a win-win-win for Costner, audiences, and Max.

It has taken a massive loss in theaters, estimates near 100 million after expenses. Guessing budgets for the remaining movies will be slashed bigly as it targets a streaming only release.
The movie was a disjointed mess where not much happened. Hard to get hooked on a series of movies when the first one jumps all over the place with very little story to hook the audience to come back

It's a good story and it's beautifully shot but it should have been a miniseries from the beginning
you would think that Costner with his star power could have gotten the the money

I am halfway through this now. It seems like is have been four hours instead of one and a half hours. It is pretty slow. I would have walked out if I saw this in the theater.

I'm about half in
I'm not bored FWIW. Have mostly enjoyed it. I like slow burn stuff though. Switching between storylines has been a bit annoying but nothing terrible.

It was ok. Great cinematography though. The acting was hallmark movie bad in the burning house attack. And I kept thinking of Sienna Miller from Curb your Enthusiasm with her over acting in this
Not sure I really care about any of the characters either like someone already said. Felt like a mini series I’d see on AMC or…Paramount.

Definitely should have been a series but I do regret not seeing some of the scenery and backdrop in the theater

The end of the movie “time passing” montage was terrible.
The second chapter will go straight to PPV or MAX.
Costner is already filming Chapter three. I imagine he will combine 3 & 4 into one chapter.

I give it about a 6.5/10. I enjoyed it but it was so hard to follow for most of it. I anticipate rewatching it soon and enjoying it much more. I want to be invested.
As someone else said already, the fast forward time lapse scenes at the end were unnecessary and only stood to confuse.

I'm usually someone who needs multiple viewings to process complicated movies, but this was pretty easy to follow. What parts were confusing to you?

I finished it this weekend, I enjoyed it. My biggest complaints were the plot / characters switching, and the length. I would not be able to watch it in theaters, I probably paused it and got up to do something 5-6 times. Also the swapping between story’s, it was just random to me, although after seeing the ending and realizing all the story lines lead to the same town on the pamphlet. The journeys it takes to get there and start the town it kind of makes sense.

quote:Just finished it. The scenery and landscapes shots are great . However the movie kinda jumps all over the place as if they cut a lot out to get to just 3 hours. For example Cosner, Marigold and baby are up on the mountain looking down on the camp after being hunted by the family of the guy he killed and she is bitching because he will go the next day to get them a tent.
The end of the movie “time passing” montage was terrible
Next time we see her she is banging some dude in a tent down in the camp. Then we jump to her screwing Costner while he is sleeping and next thing we see is the baby was given to the Chinese lady and she had ghosted Coster with with a note we didn't even get to see.
Maybe I fell a sleep and missed some development or WTF was that?

She was definitely the worst character in the whole thing along with the two wasting the water
