Even if I had the money to throw down on that mongoloid, nothing about that monstrosity excites me. Just give me a big typical

I would get excited if I could Jack him off every day and sell straws for thousands of dollars.
That would be the only thing I would get excited about with a deer in a pen.

"trophy" hunting has jumped the rails. I'm ready to join a if its brown its down club. Which is weird because I've been an advocate for "let em grow" since I was 15. Just all gotten ridiculous and has made hunting not as fun.

Man this shouldn’t even be a thing.

I work my arse off to kill good deer but they are all on low fence properties I own, lease, or have access to.

The explosion of videos from the Midwest over the past decade has been very detrimental to the sport.

I am a member of the "I Killed It In Mississippi" Facebook page. And it's crazy how many people post pictures of nice 8pts. And they apologize. It's very common to see this under the picture: "Well, I know it's not a big one. But it's the biggest one I've ever killed. And the biggest one we've had on camera for 5 years here in the piney woods of S Mississippi."

He should be busting with pride at that deer. But we have been trained that if it's not 160 inches then we have to apologize for shooting it.

That's one of the things I appreciate about the Meateater brand. Steve goes to Montana and rafts down a river into remote back country, and literally kills the first legal 2x3 mule deer that he sees.

Deer hunting used to be about the experience. Poker games that lasted until daylight. Men standing around fires talking about life. Dogs. Horses. Politics. Whatever.

Now it has become more of a family affair (women and kids). Which I totally support. This way is better. But somehow we lost our way with the trophy hunting thing. It's stupid, and cringey, and detrimental to the aesthetic of the experience.

In addition, it's turned it into a rich man's sport in many areas, where the common folk can't afford to lease ground.

This is a major problem.

I was in London in 1997 and walking through Hyde Park I stumbled into an anti hunting protest. It was against fox hunting. So I got to talking to some of the clowns that were protesting (most of them were just sitting on blankets on a pretty day enjoying the park). But the basics of it were "fox hunting is an elite sport that rich Lords and Ladies do at big estates. frick em."

They didn't give a crap about the foxes. They wanted to stick it to the rich folks. And they did. Fox hunting was banned in England in 2004.

If hunting becomes thought of as a rich man's sport in the US we will lose it. Maintaining good public access and quality outdoor experiences for the general public is absolutely paramount to keeping the sport alive

It’s a business. Hire and outfitter.

This.

We are in an age where someone can pick a deer out of a book and pay thousands of dollars to go shoot that specific "trophy". Then they brag about what they kill and people thing they are expert hunters.

Meanwhile, you have people that have to hunt hard to kill a decent deer and they are made to feel bad about it.

I have a good friend that pays tons of money to go shoot animals on a ranch in Africa. He picks out what species he wants to shoot before he even goes. I can't even fathom doing that.

This drives me bat shite crazy. Comparison is the thief of joy. If that buck got you pumped up, be proud of it. Plenty people went home empty handed that day.

My wife and I hunt a piece of property that is heavily managed, our own small acre lease nestled in between 3 or 4 other big leases all on the old MLD 3 program. We are supposed to shoot mature bucks (4.5+) per the rules of the company that manages the leases. The last couple years she has started going out by herself, and each year she's killed young 8s. Both times the first thing she said to me is "I hope he's old enough". My response is always the same, don't worry about that, if he excited you enough that you wanted to shoot him, that's all that counts.
