Why do so many people tan/sunbathe and not care about the risk of skin cancer?

Everywhere I go, I see so many people who put so much emphasis on tanning to get that perfect “look”. Tanning is considered a beauty standard now in the US. It’s everywhere. Every white high schooler and college student are walking around now with tans. Even middle schoolers are walking around with tans.

Skin cancer rates are projected to sky rocket in the next 20-30 years. All of the research shows that just getting one single sunburn significantly raises your risk of skin cancer if you’re pale and of Northern European ancestry. Why do so many people still not give a frick about the negative effects of being out in the sun all day?

Why are so many Northern Europeans not terrified of Rickets and Vitamin D deficiencies?

No different than people who smoke or regularly drink.

They don't seem to understand the risks over time or generally don't worry about what doesn't happen immediately.

Crazy how humans have survived the sun since the beginning of time, huh?

My superior genes allow me to tan easily and not get those nasty sunburns you gingers get.

Exactly. I knew someone who was overly health conscious. Would always wear sunscreen, worked out constantly, never drank, smoked or ate red meat. Still died around 80. You got to enjoy life a little

Why? 100 years ago, most people would have spent the majority of the day outside. They didn't all die of skin cancer and they weren't fatties.

Also, you can still tan while wearing sun screen.

Too little sun exposure is probably worse than too much.
