My wife wants an in ground pool any help or advice will be greatly appreciated

advice on how to talk her out of a pool?
Tell her to exercise for an hour every day for a year. If she completes that task then she is responsible enough to commit to a pool.

Tell her to go take care of neighbors pool for a month and then if and only if y'all renew your vows to state that she will do that shite every day for your own pool, start digging.

If you have any crepe myrtles growing within 2 miles, don't do it.

Go buy a blow up pool and a 12 pack. See how she reacts

Buy a house with a pool already in the ground.
Save yourself the money.

This and pay someone else to maintain it.
Doesn't get you out of the cost of repairs though.

Get an above ground pool first to see if she even likes a pool.

Do you have kids, and if so, how old are they as it could pose a safety hazard for them?
Also, if you have kids how many friends do they have now, because that number will grow exponentially if you put in a pool once word gets out.
Are you and the wife ready for "Pool Parties" from people you already know who don't have a pool and think nothing of inviting themselves over???
Add in the cost of putting in a pool, the cost of routine maintenance and the cost of upkeep and repair down the road------plus the raise in your homeowner's insurance because you now have what they consider an "Attractive Nuisance" on your property---------------cha-ching, cha-ching......

There is a local swim club near my house. I joined and really enjoy it.
I also purchased memberships for my kids families. It was only $400 per family. It's only open in the Summer. No upkeep.

For a decent looking pool, you will be looking at something close to 6 figures.
ETA: If you have kids college tuition is shocking. My 2 kids will cost that and they both have very good scholarships.

We built ours in 2020, started in Dec before Covid thank goodness.
We looked at homes with a pool and never found anything we liked better than our current place so we built one. My wife is in that thing every evening when the weather is nice enough. Upkeep is minimal during the Summer, never understand the complaint of the maintenance. Fall sucks for about 2 weeks when leaves are falling (we keep pool open year round).
If your wife grew up with a pool and will use it then go for it. If she wants one cause a friend has one and it looks nice then abort and delay and hopefully she loses the itch.

Join a local community pool club. We did that this summer. ~$500 in a good area. It's only good through the summer but I wouldn't see myself using one any other time of the year. It would be nice to have at any moments notice but again, all of the upkeep that comes with it is a pain in the arse and expensive.

When I was growing up, we'd just go to the Elks Club pool. It was always nice & the few times people were there they either kept to themselves or became instant best friends.
Another option is the YMCA, the one here does a $5 drop in rate all summer.

I'll cut against the majority of the responses. We put one in 3 years ago and it was the best decision we made in a long time. Our kids were old enough for it not to be a HUGE toddler worry, and they had years of swim lessons under their belts.
We justified it as "the kids will love it...friends over to swim... etc." All of that is true. We didn't count on it totally extending our house to the outside. It transformed how we spend our time and made our miserable summers bearable.
It costs way too much money. That's the only downside. No way around that fact.
It is super easy to maintain and doesn't cost me much money in supplies or electricity. I spend at most 5-10 minutes a week on maintenance. Clean out the robot vac. Keep the baskets emptied. Pour in some acid. Add salt and a few other things as needed every few months.

A well designed pool with a variable speed pump built by a reputable builder will have hardly any maintenance at all. Keep baskets clean. Run the robot cleaner every other day and brush the walls once a week. Done.
Had ours built in '18 and we continue to use it almost daily in the summer. I keep it open in the winter and enjoy sitting by the pool/firepit in the winter.
Pretty much enjoy it year round.

Seems like there are 2 different pool owners. Those who love them and don't mind a little time going into the pool for the payoff, and those who absolutely hate stepping outside to do any amount of work.
We have had 2 pools built at our houses. Pre-covid pool without spa was about $45k. Post covid spa and pool was right at $100k.
I don't expect the wife to go work on it, and she delivers on my expectation. But I get in it EVERY day in the summer and it is really nice and relaxing after a mow with a beer. It's worth it to me. Haven't had any maintenance repairs on either pool. Equipment should last 7 years give or take before any repairs or maintenance comes up.

I used to get hot cutting grass and just feel hot all damn day in our summers. Nothing sucks that heat out of you like a 30 minute soak right after mowing.
My buddy at work has a pool and he spends almost all day in it on the weekends. I use mine in 45 minute bursts because I'm a busy body.
On the weekends, I'll get up, have breakfast, do some chores and get in for a while. Get out for lunch. Run errands. More projects. Back in for a swim in the heat of the day. Then I will often get in after dark for a night time swim.
It totally enhances my summer days. Some people it defines their summer days. Totally different use but both awesome.
