New Orleans Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczykwas placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday.

The move was not totally unexpected; the three-time All-Pro (2018-20) and 2017 first-round draft pick had been slow to make progress from offseason knee surgery and did not participate in OTAs or the veteran minicamp. New Orleans drafted Oregon State right tackle Taliese Fuagain the first round this year but shifted Fuaga to left tackle and worked in Trevor Penning , the team's first-round pick in 2022, at right tackle.

Players on the Reserve/PUP list must sit out the first four weeks of the regular season. After that, teams have a five-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing and from the day the player begins practicing, the team would have a 21-day window to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster.

If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Ramczyk started 63 of the Saints' 64 games in his first four seasons, but the number dipped to 38 starts in 50 games the last three years as injuries began to take a toll, and Coach Dennis Allen said that neither he nor Ramczyk had seen the improvement they'd hoped to see this offseason.

The team also placed tight end Juwan Johnson , defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon , linebacker Nephi Sewell and defensive end Chase Young on the physically unable to perform list, placed receiver Chris Olave on the non-football injury list and activated receiver Bub Means from the non-football injury list.

The question is how long we do this. Full year? 2 years?

We knew this. Wont be ready for the season start, and possibly not the entire season as well. His neck surgery went well, but recovery is difficult. I do expect him to play late season if available, but wouldn't be surprised if we don't. Its why his contract was written the way it was.

I haven't heard anything in a while but last I heard his recovery was progressing very well and he might be ready by game 1. But no one will really know until he starts playing

Consensus has been that he’s on track to play in the beginning of the season. The surgery was back in March. Where are you getting “late season if available” from?

I honestly think those are on the ban list for NFL players. Pat Mcafee was talking to Aaron Rogers last year about his rehab and Aaron said that stem cells weren't allowed.

Wait, according to the advocate putting him on PUP now puts him out for the year while they could wait and he could come back after 4 games.

What a massive screwup if true.

Different list Chase is on pup list, Ram is on Reserve/Pup list. Chase Young can come back anytime he is ready. Ram is most likely done for the season.

It's Penning or bust at RT. Hope he has improved or Carr will be injured quickly. And we are also putting all our hopes and prayers at LT on a rookie. Hopefully the new oline coach is a miracle worker or we are in for a long season.

My understanding is that since Ram is a vet and he went on the list before the end of camp, he is out for the enire yeqr and cannot be broought back to the roster. He's done. Its just a question as to when they want to take the cap hit for the remainder.

He will never play again….. the only question now….

how do you pay him what’s owed and deal with the cap issues this brings. :(

Based on what he did this year, he'll take a discount to let the pro-ration play out. Hence my question.

If he's willing to take $2-5M in base salary knowing on the market he'll get $0, we can stash him for a few years and still slash his cap hit (via salary reduction).

The question is if the NFL ultimately lets us do that.

Not sure you can renegotiate contracts once the player is on the pup. Believe he has at least the 2025 year also on his current deal, so you can spread the cap hit amongst at least 2 years.
