Never heard of it growing up where there are actual slave descendants, but whatever.

The freeing of slaves ought to be celebrated. Get rid of some other holiday (looking at you, MLK) and let’s embrace it.

Dump fricking pride and black history month, which are weak as frick and way out of proportion, and let’s celebrate the end of slavery.

Caveat: it can’t be a blame whitey day. Celebration of freedom only.

Agreed 100%

I'm receptive to all the arguments about what it's going to be in practice, how annoying corporate America and libs are going to be about it, etc.

But what it traditionally has been in Texas is pretty wholesome and it's a worthy enough basis for a national holiday IMO

It's all just so exhausting. All so over played.

First time I heard of a celebration in June was by a tour guide of one of the plantations in Charleston. She said that she was part of a local group that descended from or honored the slaves that came in through Charleston harbor by walking out in the water, wearing all white, on Sullivan's Island on a certain day in June (I can't remember if it was the 19th).

She said they chose Sullivan's Island because it was the closest to the waterways the ships used, and that it was about then where they would throw the bodies of the dead passengers who didn't make it overboard, and the sharks picked up on it and would follow the ships.

This was about ten years ago, and it wasn't a guilt thing or a blame thing. It was simply to honor those who came over as slaves. It was really interesting.

Especially since it only became this because of George Floyd.

What it actually is about is the ability for white liberals/progressives to virtue signal, specifically white liberal women.

Wrong. December 6th is the actual date that should be used.

Juneteenth is just an anti-white holiday as it's celebrated by the democrats. They use it trash the very people who bled and died to free blacks.

When was the last time a black person came up to you and thanked your ancestors for DYING to free them from slavery? Never.

Why?

Are holidays some finite resource that we simply cannot spare?

There are eleven federal holidays in a normal calendar year. Some of them don't even come with days off work for anyone beyond federal government employees.

Is that simply too many for us to bear?

I guess if you're going to let the joke race over your head, I'll just say yes, of course holidays are finite.

Russ Latino had a good column:

I actually typed up some of the Juneteenth flyers for an event in Mississippi. (One of my friends was a planner and I'm a fast typist.)

I don't care about it.

Not because I think it's a fake holiday that even most blacks don't celebrate, like Kwanza, but I simply don't care.

Maybe if we saw any dip in crime and shootings tied to the "holiday", I might take notice.

But neither will ever happen,.
