Skip had just turned 63 when he retired in 2001. Maineri turns 67 in August and just got hired by South Carolina.

It’s a strange hire. Plus Tanner and Manure are near the same age - Tanner actually a few months younger. Bizarre

Feels like the hire you make to keep your program’s head above water until you find your next head coach.

It’s interesting you point this out. If Maineri is too old to run a baseball team, just think about the two fossils we’ve had as, and are running again for president. CPM is a spring chicken in comparison.

I think Paul's tenure at South Carolina won't be very lengthy.

It seems like the Gamecocks AD could have conducted a much more exhaustive search.

Seemed like maineri was enjoying retirement. I don’t understand why anyone with his finances would put himself through the wringer again.

I don’t think he’ll tank Carolina but id pretty surprised if he does much of note. Read the Carolina boards and they’re pretty pumped. Was surprised how highly they think of Rooney

It may have been the only move Tanner could make.

The players and recruits wanted Monte Lee. He couldn’t hire the failed head coach of their in state rival. So he hired a big name that would keep Lee on staff. Even better that Mainieri 100% needs Lee for recruiting. Elander, Godwin, Walter - those guys would all require control over their staff.

He might have a couple of good years left. After 70, not much left.

He will be there a couple of years to keep the program stable while they take their time exploring his successor. Good move for them.

This hire more than anything else makes me wonder if there’s something about Cliff Godwin that turns ADs off. He’d seem like a slam dunk hire for USCe

Well they were convinced they were getting a coach Clemson fired so expectations were low. They view this as another Spurrier moment.

makes me wonder if Paul and Tanner are close friends and he's doing this as a favor to Tanner.
Sorta just filling in for a year or two until Tanner gets the right guy.

Not like USC at all. They never hire past-their-prime coaches looking to get one last shot at glory.

Cliff is a good coach, but nothing special.

he has ECU pretty much exactly where the previous 3 coaches had them.
in regionals every year, a few Supers, never Omaha.

He's doing do the same thing his predecessors did in an era where it's harder for a mid major conference team to do it. He has actually elevated ECU.

As far as him not getting opportunities elsewhere, I'm pretty sure he's turned jobs down. I think it would take something really special to pull him from ECU.

Lets not forget that PM started Hellmers at third base and Bianco at shortstop. Guy was losing it in the end. Started recruiting the local high school second basemen to fill his rosters.

Exactly.

And hire (retain) a coach in waiting that isn't quite ready, so they can learn to manage a program from a seasoned vet.

I wish him luck, except against LSU.
