Is there any fixing the airline industry or is all hope gone?

We went on our ten year anniversary trip this past week and out of 5 flight segments, 4 of them were delayed ranging from 30 minutes to multiple hours. Of course we missed connections because of this and got home a day later. The past couple of years it seems like every flight we've been on has never taken off at the scheduled time and we've had checked bags lost on our past 3 trips.
So is there any fixing this industry or is it is what it is and just like everything else since Covid we are stuck with a crappy product?

This time it was American, last time southwest, and the time before that delta. It doesn't matter what airline, they've all sucked the past few years

consider the mind boggling logistical puzzle and dedication of resources required to get you from one spot to another across the country in hours with no effort on your part, and be amazed that it even happens at all

The earlier in the day you can fly the better. Flights late in the day are risky.

I've flown United a ton lately with almost no problems. The couple times I American or Delta we were hit with delays or cancelations

Lately I have had the best luck with the budget airlines like Spirit, Breeze and Avelo. Almost every time they leave on time if not early. To be fair, I mostly fly from and too smaller airports.

Fly American 3 weeks ago. Layover each way so 4 planes. Zero delays. Fly out early for less delays

I’ve flown a lot in the past two years (only once internationally) and I haven’t been delayed more than 20 minutes yet.
I’ve been lucky for sure, but I’ve had way more problems pre-2020.

I’m now on the second day of what was supposed to be one 6 hour flight yesterday. It didn’t work out at all. Airports are packed and people not happy.

While that is true, it doesn’t answer the real question from the OP.
They used to be a lot better, now they suck. Why??

To answer the OP, you need to go into the flying experience thinking ahead. If you are a reactionary type of person vs a planner, if shite hits the fan it can really suck. Knowing alternative flights to get to nearby locations, booking backup flights on other airlines, and taking the first flight out of the day are a few tips that can save you some trouble. Do you have the airlines app downloaded or their call center number in your phone in case things go sideways? Deltas app you can rebook on easily, same with united.

Departing, that's an easy one for me but that's a large pill to swallow (for me) on my return trip.
It essentially means I give up me last evening due to such an early wake up on departure day OR keeping that last night, staying one more day and coming home early one day later leaving less recovery.
I won't advise against the practice but what we've found is a good balance is to pick returning flights based around check out time and travel to the airport, etc. (so usually early afternoon when available) coming home on Saturdays if we need to return to work on Monday. Should we encounter delays it gives us a day buffer.

Fair assessment, no one likes waking up at 4am to leave vacation
. I think it more plays a factor if an airline posts a travel waiver due to anticipated bad weather or if you see a snowstorm about to hit Salt Lake but it's not supposed to start until 9am and there's a flight at 6am or 11am. Leaving for vacation, would definitely recommend early morning
Another example would be flying to Florida in the summertime. If you book anything arriving after 1pm into FLL, PBI, MIA, or MCO you run the risk of afternoon thunderstorms causing your flight to divert/be delayed.

the risks of delay or complications were always there, less options and higher profitability for the airlines just covered it up

Airports also play a huge role in this. I try and fly through certain airports that are run better. DFW seems to give me the fewest problems where IAH is a colossal clusterfrick at all times. You also need to be able to troubleshoot and think critically for the customer service people because they don’t give a frick. For example, traveling through Florida is usually easy. When they say they can’t get you to your destination til tomorrow, see if you can get booked at an airport down the road that can get you there.

Thanks but we finally arrived. It started out mechanical with an equipment change that caused an hour delay at the airport of origin. We had an hour and a half connection time at DFW so the hour delay made it difficult. We were still going to make it though as our plane was arriving 10 minutes earlier than expected. At less than 500 feet for some never explained reason the pilots aborted the landing. I’ve been through those before but this one was scary. Something went wrong. We had to re-enter the pattern and that ruined our chance of connecting. This was yesterday morning and there were no seats available on the couple of other flights to here. We ended up being rerouted to Charlotte late yesterday where American put us up for the night and flew out without incident this morning. I know this stuff happens but it is still very frustrating.

Summer flying is rough. Full flights, so little to no available seats to rebook if you’re delayed. Afternoon thunderstorms to disrupt flight schedules.
Plus the genius airline execs who almost never have any operational experience always try to squeeze in extra flights during the summer leaving them without spare planes for recovery and tight operations if there is any sort of delay.

here’s a quick united story
last Thursday MSY-DEN, 2.5hr direct flight
about 30 mins in and something fell off the plane, pilot comes on and says we lost a generator and he has to put it down in Houston.
we lane in Houston and by the time the plane is deboarded and we get to the next gate over there’s another plane lined up. The crew transfers over, they load the luggage, check everyone in and off we go. Land in DEN 1.5hrs late. I barely had time for a coffee and a piss while we were grounded
I’m sure had that not been a hub things would likely have been different but kudos to them

Definitely, very lucky to divert to IAH versus a random airport.
