Besides your kids, have you ever loaned money to someone and not been paid back?

I have a former friend that still owes me $200 not including his half of the rent for one month when we were roommates.

I'm sure my sister owes me some money from about 20 years ago.

I'm in no position to give out money now so people don't even think about asking me.

I assume the responses will mostly be family members for this one.

My Uncle

Allegedly I'll start to get some back in a few years.

I'll have to live to 350 or so to get square

I have, and never pursued it, but I also made it a point to never loan that person money again.

Yes, a so-called friend. When he didn't pay me back I went and took his golf cart.

If someone asks and I it have to spare, I just gift it to them. They will repay if they can, if not, no hard feelings.

Bailed a fraternity brother out of jail in 2001 and he has yet to pay me back. I think he’s there long term now so I’m not expecting it.

I lent $1,500 to a friend in college and was never paid back - but I wouldn’t have lent if I didn’t have it

Yep. What I learned is that you NEVER let family or friends borrow money. If you can afford it, you can give it to them with no expectation of it being returned, but never loan it to them. Always best to properly manage expectations so as to reduce risk of anger and/or hurt feelings.

I actually had a positive result by loaning out money.

When I first married my whore of an ex-wife, she had a "friend" who was constantly showing up at the house half drunk and wanting to hang out.
He was a middle school boyfriend that had become an alcoholic and a drug addict.
One day, he asked me for $100 which I gladly gave him knowing he would never pay back.
Every time I saw the guy in public, I would loudly ask about him repaying that $100.
He got in the habit of quickly walking the other way any time he spotted me.

My brother in law. He basically moved away and we never hear from him again.

I never give money to family or friends that I expect to get back.

Every now and then people do pay you back, but on average people who are bad enough with money to ask family and friends will always be terrible with money. So it is very rare you will ever get paid back.

My wife had a coworker "borrow" money from her. She's a young single mom, maybe 24 or so. I told her she'd never see that money again, and she hasn't.

It was only like $150. She asked me if I thought she should ask for it back and I told her no. No need to cause a fuss at your job over $150, just don't loan her money ever again.
