‘The Acolyte’ Creator Doesn’t Believe Her New Star Wars Series Is “Queer With a Capital Q”

Leslye Headland, showrunner of the Jedi drama starring Amandla Stenberg, is proud to inspire LGBTQ fans, but says the story is being read in unintended ways.

As for why that origin story takes place within a female witchcraft community, Headland says she took inspiration from the Nightsisters of Dathormir seen on another Star Wars series. “I was very inspired by the Nightsisters storyline and the Ventress storyline on The Clone Wars when I was a budding writer,” says Headland. “So when I got the chance to make a show set in the Star Wars universe, it felt like, ‘Well, of course I'm going to do my version of witches. I just am going to shoot my shot.’”

But The Acolyte journey into witchdom is not a mere extension of what we have already seen on other Star Wars shows, as Osha and Mae’s background perfectly fits in with the women they have become. “As the characters developed, it made a lot of sense that they would be at the center of a coven,” says Headland. “That the girls would be almost revealed not as children, but as the legacy of what their mother started.”

Headland also explains the coven’s mantra: “The power of one, the power of two, the power of many. In our show, the Jedi have the power of many. I think their mother started as one, and the girls are two, and she wants her legacy to be the power of many. So it was thought of as paying homage to The Clone Wars, but it eventually became the story of a mom and her children and the way that our parents have particular expectations for us. And if Star Wars is anything, it's got a lot of parents and children and living up to or rejecting the legacy of those parents.”

Kathleen Kennedy Says Women Who Make ‘Star Wars’ Franchise Installments ‘Struggle’ with Male Fanbase

During an interview with the New York Times for upcoming Disney+ series “The Acolyte,” Kennedy admitted that female filmmakers “struggle” with fan backlash to their respective film and TV franchise installments. Leslye Headland is the showrunner for “The Acolyte.”

“Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying,” Kennedy said. “I think Leslye has struggled a little bit with it. I think a lot of the women who step into ‘Star Wars’ struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male-dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal.”

Headland also spoke out on the surrounding fan hate she’s received.

“As a fan myself, I know how frustrating some ‘Star Wars’ storytelling in the past has been,” she said. “I’ve felt it myself. I stand by my empathy for ‘Star Wars’ fans. But I want to be clear. Anyone who engages in bigotry, racism or hate speech … I don’t consider a fan.”

Interview with Filoni

quote:

Star Wars Canon Is "Like Jazz, Not Classical Music," Explains Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni

Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni has explained his own controversial view of Star Wars canon, which amounts to it being more like "jazz than classical music." The topic of canon and canonicity has often been a controversial one in the Star Wars fandom. Disney essentially rebooted Star Wars canon after purchasing Lucasfilm, and since then everything has been treated as equal canon - in theory. But canon is difficult to manage, and contradictions are building, leading to many arguing Star Wars canon is broken

Leslye Headland says she’s always wanted to explore a live-action ‘KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC’ series or movie.

From what I’ve seen in the trailer, “riveting” is definitely not the word I’d use.

Man, blue, black, woman, trans. IT DOESNT MATTER. if the showrunner puts out a big flaming pile of shite they will get shite on all the same. This is what I truly despise about people like KK. They arent getting shite on more because they are a woman, they are getting shite on because they produce dogshit.

This will, without question, be the worst Star Wars content ever put forth. Just knowing that it’s set in the High Republic era tells me I don’t need to watch it.

That’s been the insane, woke sandbox for all the tards to play in on the book and comic side. Now they’re bringing it to TV.

The Kennedy projects? Yes. Because she picks terrible people with terrible motivations.

Still the same nonsense. I'm going to make a terrible derivative product and then wrap myself up in a rainbow flag pretending the fans hate gay people or women instead of my terrible leadership.

frick off. You killed the franchise. Just slink off into retirement with your tens of millions for destroying billions in IP.

Just imagine what a competent movie studio could do with that budget

Four episodes into Star Wars: #TheAcolyte & it’s a mixed experience. The lore hints at KOTOR potential, yet the pacing occasionally lags.

How does Disney keep making these short episode series’ and struggle with pacing?
