Jeff Landry in trial lawyers pocket

The Louisiana Legislature has passed several bills that are designed to make insurance more affordable but that trial lawyers hate. Word is that Gov will veto some or all due to his being bought and paid for by trial lawyers.
What are your thoughts?
Is Jeff Landry as conservative as he claimed in the campaign or is he a fraud?

I heard on Moon's show that Landry owes some favors because no one gets elected governor without the trial lawyers.

He clearly tanked some insurance reform bills to keep the trial lawyers happy. Mostly on the auto side.
But I doubt he would veto any bills, that would just be too upfront and have his fingerprints. Right now, he has some deniability.
There are many different "flavors" of conservative. He is a social conservative and a tough-on-crime conservative.
He is not a small government or fiscal conservative. Or really pro-business conservative, but again, next year is tax reform.

Look I’m all for bills that make insurance cheaper but we hear this shite every year. If we pass these bills insurance will go down. We heard how tort reform two years ago was going to drastically reduce car insurance. It passed yet nothing changed. If you believe anything this governor or any governor for that matter is going to do anything that forces insurance companies to change rates well
you are just a sheep. Trial lawyers get all the blame when what the state is really doing is padding the pockets of the insurance industry.

He got almost $5mil from trial lawyers, he said he’s going to veto a few bills coming through related to insurance reform unless they are watered down to nothing (same as JBE with the “tort reform”). He’ll allow some home/property reform, but won’t touch any of the trial lawyers bread and butter (auto). From what I’ve heard is the bills won’t be watered down, they’ll hit his desk and he will have a decision to make. That being said I don’t think he’s a fraud, because I’ve always seen him as a sell out and there to do nothing more than increase his political and monetary capital.

That is simply NOT true
There are several insurance companies that refuse to do business in Louisiana (Nationwide) because they can't make money
"Nationwide on your side" but not if you live in Louisiana

Yet he won Louisiana without a runoff and was overwhelmingly chosen over other conservative candidates.
There’s a reason then-candidate and State Senator Sharon Hewitt referred to him as “Lawsuit Landry” in discussing candidates’ support of the oil & gas industry.

Let me guess? You got the word from the advocate.

My thoughts are Landry knows there is a super majority so he can veto and save face with the ambulance chasers and the measures will still pass.
The other issue is that the legislature is still stacked with "republican" plaintiff lawyers who aren't going to pass anything meaningful that would hurt their bottom lines.

I sure wish you would have posted these threads when Edwards was in office.

Word from who? Random people that hate Republicans?
I’ll wait and see what Landry does.

This is 100% true. Insurance companies are at a legal disadvantage in LA. So much so that they can’t operate profitably. When supply leaves LA and demand goes up, that’s what drives up premiums. Overall, the law is bad for anyone that has to pay for insurance.

State Fatm isn't writing homes in the south. Or at least it was paused for a few years.

We should ask the plaintiff attorneys how we can reduce premiums. I bet their solution will never be to reduce payments to plaintiffs and their attorneys. Any solution which reduces premiums without reducing payouts will simply result in insurers exiting the market because Louisiana isn’t worth the risk.

There was no reform. It was watered down bullshite thanks to JBE and the trial lawyers.
A lot of good legislation has passed that would have positive impact on premiums, insurance availability and overall litigation climate that keeps businesses away from here.
Many have passed by veto-proof majorities. I suspect he will let those become law without signature.
Others may get vetoed, but it would not be a good look for him.

When I saw trial lawyer Brian Caubarraux with a Landry sign in his yard before the election, I knew he owed them. Compared to previous years I've always seen a JBE sign at election time. With that said, he's still better than Shaun Wilson the progressive Dem
