Went in to the local stop and rob to get a case of beer. A young lady (couldnt have been more than 10) was in front of me getting two sponge bob ice cream cones. She had a metal box purse.

Before the cashier rung it up she said, wait, im not sure Ill have enough for both. She dumped out all the money in her purse and it was $2.25 in quarters. Each one was $2.90. Her mother walked to the other cashier and was buying cigarettes and beer.

In the space of thinking, "what should I do here?" the cashier gave her one of the cones, pocketed the change, and told her to go away. She did something on the register to void the sale of both, even though she only had enough money for one, and then looked at me like, "what do you want?"

She and her mom vanished like a fart in the wind. Im not sure her mom even finished checking out.

What says the OT? Was I a dick for not quickly stepping in and helping a child in need? Was this some kind of ploy to get some sucker like me to help? The mom went to the other register instead of standing with her kid so that really threw me off. Would love to hear y'alls opinion on this....

Whatever you do, don't put your change on the counter. I learned that today.

What's the dilemma? The little girl has a parent who could have helped her out.

She’ll be fine with just one SpongeBob ice cream cone. This is not a “child in need”.

Not a dick. I'm not buying a kid something with their parent there.

If I were in that situation, I would do three things:
1. I’d pay for my beer
2. I would leave
3. I would drink my beer

Seems like a lot of effort for to swindle an ice cream cone out of you.

She was like a lioness teaching her cub to hunt, while she lurks in the bush. In this case, the cub failed the test, because you didn’t buy the two cones for the kid. The kid will get better at it, don’t worry.

You should have went and got a second case of beer and walked out with both saying you didn’t think you had enough for both.

I was at a CVS and about the same thing happened. The maybe 14 year old girl didn't have enough money for what she was buying. She had $5, it was $7. I looked at casher and said "I got it". The cashier gave her back the 5 and I ended up paying all of it. I didn't think much of it till later ,,, probably pre-planned.

This is when you stop even thinking about helping the kid out.

I would probably report the cashier if place had a number or something to easily report issues, but I would not go out of my way to find a way to report this particular cashier. If you go to this place often just assume you will be paying for that kind of stuff with next round of price increases.
