Graduating high school is not a big deal

We all know this. It's a foregone conclusion they're gonna graduate. It would be completely unacceptable if they didn't. They just went to the school we forced them to go to and now they're done. Everyone does it. It doesn't take any effort, it's not an accomplishment, it's nothing to be proud of. It's just what you do at that age. Why do we pretend to be so proud of them when we all know this?
All this pomp and circumstance for just turning 18 and being done with primary school is so phony and overblown

Everyone doesn’t do it. It’s a big deal for some. I’m not going to shite on anyone for being happy about it.

I didn't even get a HS graduation ring. There are some people who don't graduate and go on to be relatively successful, but yes, for the most part its expected.

I felt out of the loop and underwhelmed that we didn't make tee shirts for my seniors. Who knew they were so prevalent???

Firstly, you sound like quite the fun guy to talk to.
While we’re at it though why celebrate any forgone conclusion in life?
Kids first steps? Meh for anyone who isn’t disabled.
Birthdays? There’s a new one next year.
Live a little bit

I felt the same way when I finished. I knew I had to go to college and the graduation was a nothingburger for me. I also wish I didn't have to attend college graduation. I paid for the shite and finished and they made me sit thru two of these things (grad school). Not to mention grad school was together with general studies / education and other large degree classes. Two hours of nonsense that I had to wait thru even though I finished in the summer and had to attend the BS in December.

I also had a lot of kids in my class that it meant the world to because they literally lived in trailers that were falling apart in Livingston Parish with meth head parents.
For most it isn't a big deal, but there are some that it does mean something to.

Because in America, graduating highschool is strongly tied to entering adulthood. Its become less about the achievement itself and more about the next stage of life you're entering into.

Agreed. I will take it a step further. I didn't even want to attend my bachelor's degree graduation. I knew I was going on in grad school so what was to celebrate if it wasn't the end?

The kid had to work and practice for his first steps.
You're not congratulated for a birthday.
The students understand it better than their parents. They only care that they are leaving and life is changing. They're not proud of graduating. If that's where the focus was, on the goodbyes it would make sense. But we have to act so proud of them instead for their accomplishment.

It was no big deal to me at the time, but looking back, I realize I had a relatively normal normal family who provided for my needs and valued an education. Some kids don't have that and it's a big accomplishment to overcome their shitty upbringing and get through 12 years of school.

We all know that 90% of US students aren’t graduation worthy.

That's why it's "stay in school" not "work hard in school"
As long as you're just there, you're fine.

By no means is graduating high school particularly hard but saying first steps is more work is laughable.
Granted not the hardest education rigors to get a diploma but we’re comparing 12+ years of school to what’s more or less an instinct?
Quit hating lol

Hell, the US graduation rate is that high and we hear stories of cities like Baltimore where the valedictorian has a GPA under 1.0.
