I'm sure it is to some but it's mostly a celebration of moving on to the next stage of life. Not everyone is going to keep going to school.

we’re not too many generations removed from when graduation from hs was not a given, or just going through the motions, my parents were depression babies and a lot of the kids’ families from that time either couldn’t afford to send them to school (public schools weren’t free back then,) or couldn’t afford to not have them at home to help with trying to keep food on the table

As long as schools are judged by their graduation rate a high school diploma isn't worth much. Schools will push students forward to graduate. If something is abundant and easy to obtain it has little value.

The hell it isn’t. I received six figures worth of scholarships to a private college from graduating as valedictorian at a public high school.

Nah man. It’s an exciting time and one of the highlights of many young people’s lives. The senior class begins to come together and it’s an awesome feeling and bonding experience. There are people I graduated with that I haven’t seen in 15-20 years but if we spot each other we say what’s up and chat for a minute even if we weren’t close. It’s a real bond and in this day and age when nothing matters and no one cares about much I think it’s important.

I’m glad the parents and teachers and town tries to make it fun and special. You must’ve not had a great experience?

It is overblown. It’s something everyone is supposed to do, it’s not an accomplishment.

I’m all for celebrating it as an event as a rite of passage per se. Send the kids into the world and their next step in life. When it’s your time, have a fun time and enjoy it. Have a party if you’d like.

What we don’t need is the showing-off and acting like the teenager accomplished something difficult.
