Georgia transfer QB Jaden Rashada is suing Billy Napier, Marcus Castro-Walker, others.

This is the new world we live in.
quote:
Former University of Florida football recruit Jaden Rashada is suing coach Billy Napier, along with a big-time Gator booster and others, claiming they defrauded him out of millions of dollars by backing out of a promised $13.85 million agreement after the quarterback had turned down offers tied to other programs.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday includes an allegation that Rashada signed his National Letter of Intent to Florida on Dec. 21, 2022, less than an hour after Napier promised the player's father a $1 million "partial payment" that day upon signing. Rashada never received the $1 million, and the boosters never fulfilled the deal, the lawsuit states.
Rashada is the first known college athlete to sue his coach or a booster due to a dispute of a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal. His case, filed in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Florida, comes during a tumultuous time for the relatively new NIL market for college athletes.
A mixture of state laws and evolving NCAA guidance dictates the roles that coaches, schools and donor groups known as collectives all play in facilitating the deals athletes can now strike to make money. "Sadly, unethical and illegal tactics like this are more and more commonplace in the Wild West that is today's college football landscape," the lawsuit states. "As the first scholar-athlete to take a stand against such egregious behavior by adults who should know better, Jaden seeks to hold Defendants accountable for their actions and to expose the unchecked abuse of power that they shamelessly wielded."

good.
you should be sued if you promise x amount of money and then reneg on it.
thats how business works.
hope he got something in writing
worst case scenario florida looks shady to recruits.

Never seen a starting QB possibly playing against a coach he is suing. That would be something to see.

You would think Jaden Rashada would be a household name these days but he's gonna hold a clipboard at UGA and is probably realizing his best chance to get any significant money has evaporated.
You better choose wisely or make them earn it from a NIL standpoint when promising whatever kind of money he was offered.

He is suing because they lied during recruitment. In other news, I am suing redbull because I drank it and did not grow wings.

This is why NIL was never meant to be a pay-for-play model.

if you read about this in full its pretty wild and makes UF/Billy look really bad.

(not sure if paywall'd or not)
Also Rashada couldnt make himself look more like a guy just chasing the money as well going from UM to UF to ASU to UGA in a years span or so.

Considering what they were doing was illegal in the first place, I don’t think that’s technically how it’s supposed to work. Pay for play is still illegal, and he was offered pay for play money.
This kid played for 3 high schools, flipped from Miami to UF, signed with ASU then transferred to Georgia. He’s clearly getting pimped out for money, and this is just another attempt to get paid.

last time I checked it’s against NCAA rules. idk what law prohibits giving someone an NIL contract.

this case will be interesting to see how it plays out.
couple of notes on the language of the Law in Florida for NIL:
quote:
An intercollegiate athlete at a postsecondary educational institution may earn compensation for the use of her or his name, image, or likeness. Such compensation must be commensurate with the market value of the authorized use of the athlete’s name, image, or likeness. To preserve the integrity, quality, character, and amateur nature of intercollegiate athletics and to maintain a clear separation between amateur intercollegiate athletics and professional sports, such compensation may not be provided in exchange for athletic performance or attendance at a particular institution and may only be provided by a third party unaffiliated with the intercollegiate athlete’s postsecondary educational institution.
A postsecondary educational institution, an entity whose purpose includes supporting or benefitting the institution or its athletic programs, or an officer, director, or employee of such institution or entity may not compensate or cause compensation to be directed to a current or prospective intercollegiate athlete for her or his name, image, or likeness.
it was against the law in Florida for FU to be directly involved with any negotiations for NIL.
It's also against Florida law for NIL to be tied directly to any student attending any particular school.
And according to this article Jaden Rashada sues Billy Napier, Florida booster over NIL deal
Miami had a deal with him based on him signing with them. Which is illegal.
again, these aren't NCAA rules we're talking about. These are actual state laws that were allegedly broken.
I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not sure how that works as far as if it's a "breach of contract" if that contract was in violation of state law anyway.

It's almost like they just paid him to come to school there, instead of paying him to use his name/image/likeness. I am shocked at this turn of events and cant imagine any program or booster would do this.

His fate will be decided by Florida's final five games.
As bad as this looks for Billy, you're not going to be able to sue college football coaches for broken promises. If you have a signed contract with the UF collective, which I bet he does not, then he would seem to have a case.
