I’m not sure why you don’t understand why people who did not fill out paperwork to be in this country and then subsequently have their very large ship crash into a major bridge causing people to die arent allowed to just go free into our country.
What’s confusing here?
That - minus the ship crashing - the rest of what you typed is suddenly a problem.

why did potato head Joe say the US government was paying for the damages rather than the company that owns the ship?
Would you rather the bridge get fixed now and the channel fully reopened, or would you rather wait on a decade of litigation before anything happens?

Living on the ship is probably nicer than living in Baltimore

Give them a pole and some bait. By now there ought to be fish using that ship and the wreckage as cover.

I heard that they were necessary on the ship to maintain and carry out duties while the demo took place.

I thought Baltimore was a sanctuary city?
Ironically, they would've had no problem had the ship crashed in the Rio Grande. They'd have free housing, welfare, healthcare & voters rights by now.

Easy money for them as long as there’s power on the ship.
The reason it crash was the ship lost power.

You also forgot the part where they took their phones away and replaced their phones with flip phones. Yea, they don’t want that crew member saying a word to anyone outside of that ship on what exactly happened

You don't think its possible that they've fixed the circuits and generator(s) in the past six weeks?

quote:great point, they would likely be at sea or staying on board in the ports they call on during this time anyway.
They are usually on 6-9 month contracts anyway with not being able to or barely going ashore.
The conspiracy theorist in me is impressed that none of them have been interviewed on the deck yet though. None of those crew are likely going to face criminal charges outside of the officers, correct? Surprised that none of them have been paid for an interview yet.

Not sure if serious.
The ship crashing is a MASSIVE problem.

Those type ships typically have single man cabins. Not like a navy ship or a drilling rig.

Living on board is probably better than the living conditions of some of the countries that they are from.
In my experience, most of these 3rd world crews would work offshore as long as you would let them. And these were in living conditions I assume are worse than this ship.
They will probably talk about this hitch being the easiest money they ever got.

Not go roam free, but at least put them up in some accommodations. If they are being detained for some crime, put them in jail. If they are being asked to stay for an investigation, give them some accommodation.
The FBI also took their phones for reasons.

Jesus dude. You ever see crew quarters on these boats?
I'd sleep there if it meant that I could get paid!

They make pretty decent money compared to the rest of India. The Captain probably makes about $7-8 k a month while the messman probably makes about $1-2k a month.
I’m sure that they are glad to collect a paycheck, they are probably bored out of their mind. One of the things that helps pass the time at sea is work and they are probably very limited in what they can do on board.
I’d imagine most of them are pretty nervous that they won’t be hired in the future.

They aren’t spending their time off in a 4 BR 2800sf house with 2 central AC units and running around in their bay boat while collecting a salary.
They are coming from the 3rd world and making shitty money. But the meter is (or should be) running as long as they’re on that boat. They also aren’t spending money.
If the boat isn’t moving, they probably don’t even have much to do besides eat and watch TV, maybe answer a few questions when asked.

People of Baltimore still driving much longer distances and losing hours of their days every working day because the crew didn't maintain their ship's integrity and it took out an important bridge.
What is the difference between 21 days at sea in the middle of the Pacific and 21 days in Baltimore harbor? Fresher food? Still being paid? (or not).
Less work to do?
