I like what he’s saying and It needs to be said by more coaches
If you want to come here, it needs to be for the right reasons. We don’t want mercenaries who come in as prima Donna’s.
We want players who want to be a part of a team.
They’ll get paid but that can’t be the primary reason.
That said, if a guy is a quality player, good attitude, great leader etc, and another programs NIL throws $5 mil at him and we can only muster $1mil then he’d be dumb to ignore the money…

I mean I get what Kelly is saying but we are very thin at DL. Let's think about the teams that are overpaying here:Oklahoma, Miami, Texas, Texas A&M. What have they got in common? Let's just say there has not been a lot of championships recently and Aggie well.......
I give Coach Kelly the benefit also but he doesn't have a natty either and we still don't have a legit SEC starter DT

He's right........... More coaches need to say it. We can't pay a DT more than our top ten draft pick offensive tackle. It resets the whole bar. It's not like he wouldn't they wouldn't get paid if they came here. Come here be a good teammate, get coached up by the best coach in the country at DL, get drafted, and make half a million.

Dabo said/doing the same thing...

We're not doing the same thing as Dabo. We just got a Heisman winning QB from the portal.

Well Keon Coleman and Fisk both crushed last year for FSU but interesting thought nonetheless
Keon came into college just after Covid before NIL blew up.
I’m talking about a top HS player today getting several million and staying focused on football.

I hope they pay these kids whatever ridiculous sum they ask for and make them clean the toilets around campus!!

“Because LSU does the things that allows a team to compete for national titles, like Ohio State does, like Georgia does, like Alabama does. And, now you say you don’t want to do the things that people do to compete for national titles? You say you’re not into buying players. LSU is into buying coaches. They bought you for $10 million a year to win national championships. They didn’t buy you to say, ‘We’re not into buying players.'”

I wouldn't pay good money to simply build depth in any position. If you've got the right position coaches on the staff, then its on them to develop that depth.
I'd only go the mercenary route for an absolute game changer type athlete, and those types are few and far between, and is often a gamble on whether or not the pan out to their max potential.

Ok so let’s say we pay Damonic Williams 1.5 for average defensive line play for one season.
That’s more than either of our Offensive Coordinators make btw but let’s say we do it.
We can afford an extra 1.5 this year no problem.
But what happens next year? Williams is gone but Whit Weeks is still here. All of those freshman DBs are still here. Nuss is still here. That whole incoming 2025 recruiting class is here.
Do you honestly think they won’t be in BK’s office saying “well you paid him that and I’m better than him so where’s my money?”
Literally what happened to Saban that broke his spirit and made him quit.

Coaches don’t pay players.
They can go out and get donors to pay them through either a collective or directly.
Consider that all coaches are tugging at the purse strings and you can see how it gets complicated.
Baseball team has the chance to land the best pitcher ever known and he’s from Baton Rouge and he’s demanding at least 1mm a year. The football coach needs that for a running back who isn’t even a 5 star…
It gets real complicated.
What I think we’re hearing Kelly say between the lines is that there simply isn’t the amount of money needed to get the top players. It’s a limited pool of money.
Baton Rouge is small market afterall.
Look at what fed ex just dedicated to Memphis. Over 20mil !
We don’t have any company willing to dedicate that kind of money. Not even close.

was almost with ya until ya got here...no one cares about D2 titles or regular season wins as long as you still haven't won the big one!

Said contracts will be tied to a specific school or they are useless to the “boosters”.

No it isn’t. You’re seeing a lot of guesswork in this thread.

Well I guess Coach Kelly isn’t that serious about winning a national championship then.

So you want to pay a very average DT the same as your HC or the same as Perk or Nuss? Yea that would go over great with the locker room. Both Barrow and Williams wanted 7 figures, it’s a fact. BK wisely chose not to be held hostage by uncles and former coaches with their hands out. You can’t allow your program to be basically ransomed like that or it will end badly down the road for you.
