What's the closest you or a family member has been to a part of history?

And I welcome those stories but am interested in more of more specific moments that are historic.

I was in Iraq…
Closest to a history book moment is we were on patrol and when Abu Gharib (sp) was attacked, we responded and were in the middle of that battle.
We were in others but nothing famous.

I’m a descendant of King Alfred, the first King of England and also the Great Eagle (Chief Willenawah), head of the Cherokee nation.
My cousin was the second most famous soldier in WW2. They made a movie about him (he survived the Bataan March and had an Air Force base named after him).
My wife’s grandfather was a matchstick man in the famed 101st that stormed Normandy (Band of Brothers show)

One of Barry Bonds homers hit off my knee at turner field. Had it been 30ish homers later, the homer that broke Hank Aaron’s record would have hit off a 14 year olds knee and then stolen by a 48 year old drunk

My great x 5 grandfather was a pirate named Jean Lafitte, who resided at (and smuggled/hid out at) what is now Lafitte’s Blacksmith’s Shoppe, the oldest bar in America .. he also got up to many other shenanigans back in that time .

My dad’s first cousin was a POW and was imprisoned with John McCain. He was right behind McCain getting off the plane when they returned to the US.

I was featured as one of the crazy shirtless fans on ESPN for the 2002 LSU/Bama game.
I was ripped and the Announcers kept cutting to me making fun of me for being the only idiot with his shirt off in 20 degree wind chill. My grandfather was laid up in the hospital asking “who is that retard?”
My cousin, who was sitting with him, said “that’s your grandson”

Both of my grandfathers were at the atomic bomb testings in Nevada during the 50s.
