Those guys were playing to eat and support their families and not being made multimillionaires upon signing up. Those guys were the greatest ones
I feel like these two things don’t necessarily go together. The lack of money in golf, meant the fields weren’t as deep. The same way golf is deeper now than when Tiger started playing on Tour as well.

Can’t wait to see all the dedicated coverage of his Sunday round at +18.

You think Jack Nicklaus is why Nike paid Tiger 40 million at age 21?
They made golf popular enough for it to grow into what it is today. When they started filtering out the game was a heck of a lot more lucrative than when they started. Today’s golfers are benefiting from their contribution big time..
Jack was best in his day, woods was best in his. No way of comparing them head to head in their prime without seeing them play each other that way.

I never watched the sport and don't now, but I was aware of Nicklaus as a kid.

and he'll use that "extra special" exemption to withdraw right before he misses the cut, like he tends to do when he's not doing well....
He's literally W/D in 3 majors in his entire career.
Exactly 1 of those W/D's was before the cut line. It was the 1995 US Open when he "hurt his wrist" on his way to missing the cut as an amateur in the 2nd round.
His other 2 major W/D's (2022 PGA, 2023 Masters) were after making the cut.

Damn, Hale Irwin was granted an exemption in 1990 and won! Wow, that amazing.

Not sure why people get so bent out of shape over Tiger.
Even when he's not playing well, he moves the needle more than any other player on the course. I've been to tournaments, and you can't deny it. You can have the world #1 golfer on the course, but the gallery is following Tiger.
When Tiger arrives to the driving range or putting green, people leave the course to go watch. It's 20 deep to watch him chip.

Another year of him stealing a spot from someone who deserves it. It's not a lifetime achievement award. Anyone who has watched him play the last few years knows he's never going to seriously compete in a 4 round tournament again.

Whoever DV'd this has never played there. I'm a pretty good golfer, and I've played No. 2 three times. My lowest score, third time playing it in four years, was an even 100. Those little bushes along the fairway can go frick themselves. Miss a fairway, and your ball is stopping right behind one. Those turtle shell greens can go frick themselves. Hit a great shot and just watch your ball roll right off hole after hole and you'll start drinking on the front 9 like it's a muni course.
Around a 12 handi when I played #2 in 2015. Shot a 94.
Pros aren't afraid of the natural areas. They hit fine out of it. Greens are tricky.
Went down and watched the final round at the last Open at Pinehurst.
Kaymer destroyed the field that day in 2014 Was a boring final round.

Maybe all the golf bro websites- Barstool etc will tone down the hype after Tiger's Masters performance.
The week leading up to the Masters was awful. Every couple of hours another site put out content about Tiger being "back" with quotes from people who saw him play a practice round. "Tiger is hitting the best I've ever seen" "I expect him to be in the mix on Sunday" etc. and then he limps home dead last.

You are an idiot. Nobody is getting bent of shape or losing a spot to one of the all time greats. You think the amateur at the Masters cared that he was playing on Tiger's worst round ever? Do you think that's what he took away from it?

Is he finishing in last place or is he making the cut? I’m confused based on your post
I never go into a tournament thinking Tiger will finish last out of all the field. I was saying last of those to make the cut, just like he did at the Masters.

You're right. Tiger was the better and more dominant player. And I don't even like Tiger, but he was better.

Yeah, it was. We moved with a couple of groups early until posting up in the stands on 17 in the shade.

Another year? This is the first time he's ever been given a special exemption. Tiger also isn't "stealing" anyone's spot. They don't take someone's spot who otherwise would have qualified and give it to Tiger. That's not how the special exemption works. How to qualify for the Open is in black and white. None of those guys get screwed over to make room for a special exemption. Here is who has automatic exemptions LINK

It's not a lifetime achievement award
Yeah, it kinda is, which is why Jack has received special exemptions 8 times, Arnold 5x, Hale Irwin 3x, Tom Watson 4x, Phil Mickelson 2x, Ernie Els 2x, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, etc, etc, etc. Special exemptions in the US Open have been happening for a long time and will continue to happen. This isn't, in any way, unique to Tiger Woods
