The Anti Populist Crowd

I've noticed recently that the anti-populist crowd has become sort of emboldened. And they seem to have a common set of talking points. First and foremost among these is the idea that MAGA is basically a bunch of weak, stupid, failures who advocate for taxing the rich.
I find this view particularly odd as I have never heard any advocacy for taxing the rich among the MAGA folks.
MAGA, to me, means, being anti corruption, anti endless war, pro free enterprise but anti government/ corporate collusion that results in restrictions on free speech, economic hardship affecting the vast majority of working Americans, corporations advocating a?horent social agendas...etc.
I don't know a single MAGA who supports deficit spending or who wants to privatize sectors of the economy.
So my question is, who are these people? Are they left wing democrats incognito? Are they "traditional conservatives" who don't know about or understand the deep state / corporate collusion? Or don't care? Do they just yern for the days of Mitt Romney?
Who are you? Your are a very unpleasant lot.

I can’t help but mention that Roger Shrubber is chief among the bomb throwers in that crowd. Which touché, I don’t even really know what the hell he and/or they are talking about, as none of it makes any sense in terms of their lashing out.

They are neocons - acolytes of Bill Kristol.

I think you have to distinguish between the population at large and DC.
Anti-populist in DC are people like Schumer, McConnell and just about everyone else, except for 10 or so people. They don't care what the People want. They look at the People with contempt. Most of the citizenry agrees on most topics. But DC has its own agenda. Populist should not be confined to just the MAGA/Trump group. It's much larger and if we united these different populist segments, we would upend the DC Insurgent Class.
Outside of DC there's just a small group that are onboard with the party message and these are anti-populist.

What specifically makes Trump a proponent of populism in the pure and technical sense of the concept? As opposed to traditional and “routine” politics and campaigning that’s more or less the basis of every American election?

It’s such a meaningless term to me.

Well it's a matter of the lesser of two evils. At least Trump makes some good decisions.
You might as well ask what makes Trump better than GW Bush, or Romney, or McCain.
The establishment nominated really, really shitty candidates.
Trump pulled us out of the Paris Climate Accord.
Trump had more of A Ross Perot approach to Trade
Trump admitted that our foreign policy and the forever wars are often immoral.
Trump did slow the illegal immigration.
Trump, possibly inadvertently, exposed the deep state and flushed out the evil FBI and CIA.

Anybody confused abut what populism is, just read the above exchange.
It tells the whole story in three sentences.

I guess what subtly getting at with that particular response from me (not directed at you, mind you) is that much like numerous other concepts and labels and such is that very seldom if ever is every person involved in those discussions and skirmishes on the same page as far as what the concept or label means, i.e. a “universally” accepted definition of the term even if only for that specific conversation. The term is often used as an insult in some peoples’ minds without knowing any substantive context of the matter. So it’s just difficult if not impossible to have an actual legitimate discussion on this and similar topics.
Most folks who participate in discussion of this topic aren’t even aware that there are numerous subcategories of “populism,” all across the political spectrum, yet the idea is thrown around as if it were a singular, narrow concept that applies almost exclusively to a single subset of voters.

Your right. There are subsets. I guess it's fair to call Bernie Sanders Socialists populists.
But in the nomenclature of the day, when they talk "populism", they are talking MAGA. And on this board the attacks are against maga populism.
And the critics lump that into socialism.
If I have to give a definition of our populism. It would be something like this
We could go on and on. But having written that. I would like to know exactly how that is socialism. I am suspicious that it attacks may just be ignorance, which I am sympathetic to, as I was pretty ignorant of reality for a long long time.

If I have to give a definition of our populism. It would be something like this
quote:
Populists are Constitutionalists who believe in freedom and free enterprise and are against a permanent bureaucratic state and it's corporate co-conspirators. Populists also believe in US soverignty and legal immigration that promotes prosperity. Populists believe in fiscal responsibility and monetary policy that promotes a stable currency. Populists believe in smaller , more limited government. Populists believe in a foreign policy which is non-interventionist. Populists believe in free trade to the extent that it is fair. Populists. for the most part, consider Climate Change to be hoax an international conspiracy to reduce population, freedom, and quality of life. Populists believe the government often engages in misinformation and conspires with corporations to limit free speech. Populist believe unequal justice is the rule of the day.
We could go on and on. But having written that. I would like to know exactly how that is socialism. I am suspicious that it attacks may just be ignorance, which I am sympathetic to, as I was pretty ignorant of reality for a long long time.

The dude says whatever he thinks his audience at any given time wants to hear.

We are going to save our Second Amendment.

That is why I have called for red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders.
quote:
Although the Obama administration repeatedly concluded that particular bump stock type devices were lawful to purchase and possess, I sought further clarification of the law restricting fully automatic machine guns.
quote:
Bump stocks, we are writing that out. I am writing that out. I don’t care if Congress does it or not, I’m writing it out myself.
quote:
Obama Administration legalized bump stocks. BAD IDEA. As I promised, today the Department of Justice will issue the rule banning BUMP STOCKS with a mandated comment period. We will BAN all devices that turn legal weapons into illegal machine guns.
quote:
I like taking guns away early. Take the guns first, go through due process second.

We have tremendous support for really common-sense, sensible, important background checks.
quote:
What are we going to do about assault rifles?
quote:
Well, it’s the military weapons.
quote:
It doesn't make sense that I have to wait till I'm 21 to get a handgun but I can get this [AR-15].
quote:
I support the ban on assault weapons
quote:
So we’ll take a look at [a new assault weapon ban].
