Pennix is not NFL ready right now and needed to go somewhere where he would be in the bullpen for most of his rookie deal. Like Jordan Love
But Penix is 24 years old now. I'd hope he'd be ready by the time he's 27. Maybe ready for retirement.

Signed an average QB
He was leading the league in rankings last year when he got hurt. They paid him an enormous amount of money.
Passed on a stud receiver and a generational talent at te for a player that will ride the bench until he’s 27.
If I was a falcon fan I would be absolutely livid…

Penix is almost four years older than Jordan Love was when he was drafted. Going into this season Penix will be 24 and Love 25. GB also has one of the best offensive coaches in the nfl to mold Jordan Love, which the falcons do not have.
And GB was “stuck” with Rodgers. The Falcons have known penix would be there at 8 all off season. They didn’t have to go get cousins, they could’ve signed a Ryan tannehill or Jacoby Brissett type

In about 8 years, when Penix develops into what Geno Smith is now, you will rue the day you scoffed at the Falcons decision-making.
Posted on 4/26/24 at 12:23 am to LSUFreek
Lol, it took Geno four teams to develop. I won't rue anything about Penix because he won't be in the division anymore at that point.

Ehh, going market rate for a veteran average-above average QB. It’s a lot of money, but it’s the going rate nowadays.
for an established good QB sure but TB signed Mayfield for like $8 before last year. If you’re drafting a QB at -#8 you should have gone that route. Than $180M for Cousins. And this is nothing like Love or Rodgers who were picked in the 20s. Rodgers was a contender for #1 overall and fell to 23. This is a top 10 pick

That cousins is 35 years old and Penix could be a franchise QB.
If Penix could be a Franchise QB than you don't pay 180 million for 4 years for another QB. That don't make any sense especially when Cousins hasn't even played his 1st year of his contract. They need to make their team better and they had a top 10 pick. Atlanta needs Defensive help the first 7 picks off the board were Offensive players. So that means they could have had a chance at the best defensive player to fill a need in this draft at any defensive position. I don't get the logic or the pick.

Valid points. But they couldn’t have found someone else to fill the gap for cheaper? Also, it’s coming out that cousins camp is not happy at all with this.
Yeah I’m not a huge Penix fan. I’m just saying that if I were a gm I wouldn’t let a big short term contract on an aging qb deter me from taking a young qb if I really liked him. He could end up being total crap.

The problem is that they apparently didn't tell Cousins their intentions. They just said to him that they would be taking a QB at some point, not that they targeted Pennix. According to Diana Russini, he's not happy about that.
Given Cousins's former team seemed happy to let him go (even though they didn't have a clear succession plan) and the very first thing he did for his new team is get them in trouble for tampering, I would recommend Cousins get over his "anger". He's a slightly above average 35 year old QB getting paid a lot of money on the back end of his career. The earliest the Falcons will cut him if it doesn't work out is when he would be 37. I'd say he's got a pretty good deal.

Yeah, if they really liked Penix (and obviously they did), the were in position to get him in the draft and didn't need to spend on Cousins. What this kind of signals is they wanted a vet to try to win immediately, but they aren't particularly sold on the vet they signed. Why not just save the money and take Penix at 8. Or hell, even if they had to trade up a spot or two to get him they had to know he would be available in the 5-7 range.

Can someone explain why they signed Cousins and drafted Penix?
Not sure but I'm glad they did it. Just shows that they're a mess and as long as they keep doing stupid shite like this, it's a good thing for the Saints.

Cousins is only a 2-3 year plan, no matter how great he is.

I think they believe they can win now. Penix would not put them in that position.

This reasoning has worked well for the Packers.
I think a lot of young QBs fail because they are thrown into the fire too early. It's a rookie contract, so not a lot of money, and in 2 or three years he may be a helluva player.

I guess I’m just wondering if they had intentions to get a QB in the draft or they felt it was the best value pick. The cousins signing wasn’t all that long ago. Did they do that knowing they were going to get a qb in round 1

I think the reason this pick is getting so much scrutiny is nobody viewed Penix as a top 10 pick. He was more late teens to second round sort of guy.
If they think he’s going to be a franchise QB, then it’s the right move. It doesn’t matter when they picked him. Drew Brees was a 2nd round pick and became a great one eventually.

This would make sense if you were just hired as GM and inherited an old vet in the middle of a long term deal. If you were the guy that 2 months ago signed a vet for 4/$180M and then turned around and draft a rookie in the top 8, you would be an idiot

Guys tend to do well when they can sit a year or so
Do they? CJ Stroud didn’t sit. Neither did Burrow or Herbert. Allen started 11 games as a rookie. Brock Purdy was a 7th round pick and looked just fine starting by the end of the season as a rookie.
If sitting a year is the magic formula shouldn’t someone trade for Trey Lance.

Drew Brees was the 32nd overall pick in the 2001 draft. He went first in the second round.
Being 32nd was like last in the first round. Food for thought.
Posted on 4/26/24 at 11:15 am to H-Town Tiger
Yeah and for every Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes there’s a Trey Lance or a Paxton Lynch.
I think the causation is more that often when guys are sitting for a year or more it’s because they’re on a stable team with a good coach and good supporting cast. If you happen to have that your rookie year, think Lamar Jackson or Russell Wilson, you can succeed right away as a rookie.
